Music and politics. The work of Puerto Rican artists as a form of social protest

Celem pracy jest interpretacja tekstów utworów muzycznych współczesnych portorykańskich artystów, zgłębienie wątków poruszanych w konkretnych piosenkach, odnajdywanie odniesień w historii, kulturze, sztuce i polityce Portoryko. Działalność artystyczna daje możliwość ekspresji, wyrażenia emocji, często również zwraca uwagę na dany problem i pomaga go zrozumieć – w rzeczywistości takie rezultaty przynoszą działania twórców, którzy stosują praktyki artywizmu czy aktywizmu muzycznego. Muzyka daje również możliwość utożsamiania się z określonymi wydarzeniami czy odczuciami. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia krótką historię wyspy oraz prezentuje jej cechy charakterystyczne. Rozdział drugi skupia się na wydarzeniach związanych z aferą Telegramgate oraz analizuje tekst utworu pod tytułem „Afilando los Cuchillos”. Opisuje sposób w jaki gubernator Ricardo Rosselló wykonywał swój urząd i dlaczego został go pozbawiony oraz protesty, które miały miejsce na wyspie w tamtym okresie. Rozdział trzeci w całości poświęcony jest utworowi „This is not America” poprzez swą złożoność, wielość poruszanych wątków i dużą ilość odwołań. W tym rozdziale znalazły się również ilustracje porównujące m.in postaci, które zapisały się w historii z tymi, które można zauważyć w teledysku do utworu. Rozdział czwarty prezentuje trzy utwory, które w swoich teściach odnoszą się w sposób negatywny do polityki czy działań Stanów Zjednoczonych.

The aim of the work is to interpret the lyrics of musical works by contemporary Puerto Rican artists, to explore themes explored in specific songs, finding references in Puerto Rican history, culture, art and politics. Artistic activity provides an opportunity for expression, to express emotions; it also often draws attention to an issue and helps to understand it. Music also provides an opportunity to identify with certain events or feelings - in fact, such results are produced by artists who use the practices of artivism or musical activism. Chapter one gives a brief history of the island and presents its characteristics. Chapter two focuses on the events surrounding the Telegramgate affair and analyses the lyrics of the song entitled 'Afilando los Cuchillos'. It describes the way in which Governor Ricardo Rosselló exercised his office and why he was deprived of it, as well as the protests that took place on the island at the time. The third chapter is entirely devoted to the piece 'This is not America' through its complexity, the multiple themes explored and the large number of references. This chapter also includes illustrations comparing, among other things, the characters who made history with those that can be seen in the video for the song. The fourth chapter presents three pieces that make negative references to US politics or actions in their in-laws.
