"West Side Story" and Its Significance for the American Musical Theatre

Amerykański teatr muzyczny często stanowi odzwierciedlenie historii i przemian jakie zachodziły w społeczeństwie amerykańskim. Jednym z kluczowych dzieł pełniącym tą funkcję jest musical "West Side Story". Jest on nowoczesną adaptacją dramatu "Romeo i Julia" Williama Szekspira. Stworzony przez czwórkę niezwykłych artystów - Jerome'a Robbinsa, Leonarda Bernsteina, Arthura Laurentsa i Stephena Sondheima - musical zamienia zwaśnione rodziny na walczące gangi uliczne, których członkowie pochodzą z różnych grup etnicznych, a Weronę na Nowojorskie ulice Upper West Side. American musical theatre is often a reflection of the history and changes that occur in the american society. One of the most significant shows that convey that is "West Side Story". It is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". Created by four extraordinary artists - Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim - the musical turns feuding families into warring street gangs whom members come from different ethnic groups, and Verona into New York streets of Upper West Side. Musical conveys issues current for the 1950s such as race, contestation and intolerance caused by prejudice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of "West Side Story" in the history of the American musical theatre and to show its significant character for both the artists that created it and society.
