Comparative analysis of separatist movements in Catalonia and the Basque Country

Kraj Basków i Katalonię wyróżnia poczucie odrębnej tożsamości narodowej, wynikające z historii, języka, religii i kultury, którego źródeł można doszukiwać się już w średniowieczu. Tożsamość narodowa wpłynęła na rozwój ruchów separatystycznych w tych regionach, a w konsekwencji działań na rzecz rozszerzenia przywilejów, wynikających z Statutu Autonomii, bądź działań na rzecz niepodległości regionu.Celem analizy porównawczej było wykazanie podobieństw i różnic w ruchach separatystycznych w Hiszpanii, na przykładzie Kraju Basków i Katalonii, poprzez omówienie kwestii historycznych, kulturowych i językowych, jak również rozwoju tendencji nacjonalistycznych, terroryzmu oraz obecnych dążeń niepodległościowych.

The Basque Country and Catalonia are distinguished by a sense of a separate nacional identity resulting from history, language, religion and culture, the sources of which can be traced back to the Middle Ages. National identity influenced the development of separatist movements in these regions, and, as a consequence, activities aimed at extending the privileges resulting from the Statute of Autonomy, or activites for the independence of the region.The purpose of the comparative analysis was to show the similarities and differences in separatist movements in Spain, using the example of the Basque Country and Catalonia, by discussing historical, cultural and linguistic issues, as well as the development of nacionalist tendencies, terrorism and the current independence aspirations.
