Michel Foucault's concept of subjectivity in the art of living

Przedmiotem moich rozważań jest sztuka życia i związana z nią koncepcja podmiotowości, powstała w późnej twórczości Michela Foucaulta. W celu eksplikacji fenomenu badanej formy podmiotowości, w pierwszym rozdziale sięgam do teoretycznego podłoża wypracowanego we wcześniejszych pracach Foucaulta, wyciągając z niego dwie istotne cechy podmiotu – jego historyczność oraz bycie konstytuowanym poprzez pewne praktyki. W następnym kroku, w rozdziale drugim sięgam za Foucaultem do antycznych źródeł, z których filozof czerpie inspiracje dla swojej koncepcji. Rekonstruuję trzy aspekty kultury antycznych pogan, które sprawiły, że etyka Greków i Rzymian przybrała postać sztuki życia; następnie, rekonstruuję proces podmiotowej autokreacji jednostki w antycznej Grecji i Rzymie, dokonywany poprzez praktyki zwane askesis. W rozdziale trzecim dokonuję charakterystyki omawianej formy podmiotowości. W rozdziale czwartym przedstawiam współczesne pole zastosowania sztuki życia oraz dokonuję krytyki kształtu sztuki życia proponowanego przez Foucaulta, aby następnie zaproponować powrót do wzoru antycznego, który stanowić może odpowiedź na współczesny problem konsumpcjonizmu.

The subject of my considerations is the art of living and the related concept of subjectivity, which arose in the late works of Michel Foucault. In order to explain the phenomenon of the investigated form of subjectivity, in the first chapter I refer to the theoretical basis developed in Foucault's earlier works, drawing from it two essential features of the subject - its historicity and being constituted by certain practices. In the next step, in chapter two, I follow Foucault to ancient sources from which the philosopher draws inspiration for his concept. I reconstruct the three aspects of ancient pagan culture that made the ethics of the Greeks and Romans take the form of an art of living; then, I reconstruct the process of subjective self-creation of the individual in ancient Greece and Rome through practices called askesis. In the third chapter, I describe the discussed form of subjectivity. In the fourth chapter, I present the contemporary field of application of the art of living and criticize the shape of the art of living proposed by Foucault, and then I propose a return to the ancient model, which may be a response to the contemporary problem of consumerism.
