Absurd in the Endgame of Samuel Beckett

Celem mojej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza absurdu w dramacie Samuela Becketta zatytułowanym "Końcówka" (1957), emblematycznym dla teatru tego nurtu. Główne jego założenia analizuję w odniesieniu do teatralnej koncepcji Becketta. Dlatego też skupiłam się na poszczególnych elementach dramatu, zaczynając od wyglądu sceny, poprzez język i czas ukazany w sztuce, skończywszy na analizie postaci. Praca udowadnia, że przez pryzmat absurdu i ogólnego poczucia beznadziei, Beckettowi udaje się przekazać uniwersalne idee, niepozbawione gorzkiej refleksji. Dramat ten, poprzez swoją oryginalność i precyzyjną konstrukcję potwierdza rolę Samuela Becketta jako twórcy teatru absurdu.

The main point of my BA thesis is an analysis of the absurd in Samuel Beckett's play entitled "Endgame", typical of this theatre trend.I have looked into main foundations of the theatre in reference to Beckett's theatre concept. Therefore I have focused on particular elements of this play starting with an overall look of the scene, through an analysis of language and time and exploration of the main protagonists. My thesis proves a point that Beckett, having used a motif of absurd and overall sense of hopelessness, has managed to express universal ideas without avoiding bitter reflections on human life. The Endgame, being highly original and precisely constructed play, confirms Beckett's pivotal role in making the theatre of the absurd.

L’objectif de mon mémoire consiste en analyse de l'absurde dans le drame de Samuel Beckett intitulé "Fin de partie" (1957), emblématique pour le théâtre de ce courant. J'analyse ses principes en me référant aux conceptions théâtrales de Beckett. C'est pourquoi je me concentre sur des éléments particuliers du drame, en commençant par l’exposition de la scène, le langage et le temps présentés dans la pièce, jusqu'à l'analyse des personnages. L'œuvre prouve qu'à travers le prisme de l'absurdité et du sentiment général de désespoir, Beckett parvient à transmettre des idées universelles, marquées par une réflexion amère. Ce drame, par son originalité et sa construction rigoureuse, confirme le rôle de Samuel Beckett en tant que créateur du théâtre de l’absurde.
