Landscapes of the Metropolis of Death: Reflections on Memory and Imagination by Otto Dov Kulka as a literary testimony.

Celem niniejszej pracy było pokazanie specyfiki książki pt. Pejzaże metropolii śmierci. Rozmyślania o pamięci i wyobraźni, autorstwa pochodzącego z Czechosłowacji historyka – Ottona Dova Kulki. Analizy koncentrują się na sposobie, w jaki Kulka łączy dwa podstawowe modele pisania o Holokauście, czyli historiografię oraz literaturę. Takie połączenie sprawia, że czytelnik zostaje postawiony wobec nieoczywistego i nowatorskiego sposobu pisania o wydarzeniach z czasów drugiej wojny światowej. Jednocześnie skonfrontowany zostaje z osobistym doświadczeniem ocalonego oraz z meandrami jego pamięci. Praca uwzględnia także różnorodność form literackich zastosowanych przez autora i ich rolę w kształtowaniu pamięci historycznej. Poprzez dokładne opisanie zastosowanych metod narracyjnych oraz literackich środków wyrazu w pracy zostaje zaprezentowany sposób, w jaki autor tworzy swoje unikalne świadectwo literackie.

The aim of this study was to present the specificity of the book Landscapes of the Metropolis of Death: Reflections on Memory and Imagination by the Czechoslovak-born historian Otto Dov Kulka. The analysis focuses on the way in which Kulka combines two fundamental models of writing about the Holocaust: historiography and literature. This combination confronts the reader with an unconventional and innovative approach to writing about the events of World War II. At the same time, the reader is confronted with the personal experience of a survivor and the complexities of his memory. The study also takes into account the variety of literary forms used by the author and their role in shaping historical memory. By thoroughly describing the narrative methods and literary devices employed, the work presents how the author creates his unique literary testimony.
