Evolution and causes of Catalan separatism

Katalonia jest jedną z siedemnastu Wspólnot Autonomicznych Hiszpanii, leży w północno-wschodniej części Półwyspu Iberyjskiego. Od ponad dziewięciu lat coraz śmielej wyraża ona swoje aspiracje niepodległościowe. Jej ewentualny sukces może oznaczać początek znaczących przeobrażeń w strukturze terytorialnej całej Europy oraz konieczność redefinicji roli i znaczenia państw we współczesnym porządku politycznym Unii Europejskiej.Więc przedmiotem zainteresowania i tematem danej pracy będzie ewolucja oraz przyczyny separatyzmu katalońskiego, które będą badane pod kątem głównych argumentów, na które powołują się Katalończycy, aby wyjaśnić co doprowadziło do zasadniczej zmiany dążeń od większej autonomii do secesji.W pracy postawiono hipotezę, zgodnie z którą dążenie do uzyskania niepodległości przez Katalończyków wynika bardziej z przyczyn polityczno - ekonomicznych, niż kulturowo - historycznych, jak się powszechnie twierdzi. Dla odpowiedzi posługiwano się metodami historycznymi, zwłaszcza analizą tekstów źródłowych i przestrzeganiem kolejności chronologicznej opisywanych wydarzeń oraz metodą porównawczą, polegającą na wyciągnięciu wniosków poprzez komparację omawianych zjawisk.Przedstawiono, jaki wpływ na obecny kształt tożsamości katalońskiej miała historia oraz dlaczego stanowi ona jedną z kluczowych determinant obecnych dążeń niepodległościowych Katalonii. Natomiast dla ukazania przebiegu współczesnego dyskursu w Katalonii związanego z wizją niepodległego państwa, posługiwano się zaś przede wszystkim metodą ilościową w postaci sondaży opinii publicznej obywateli Katalonii.

Catalonia is one of the seventeen Autonomous Communities of Spain, located in the north-eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. For more than nine years, it has been boldly expressing its aspirations for independence. Its possible success may mean the beginning of significant transformations in the territorial structure of the whole Europe and the necessity to redefine the role and importance of country in the contemporary political order of the European Union. So the subject matter and topic of the work will be the evolution and causes of Catalan separatism, which will be examined in terms of the main arguments cited by the Catalans to explain what led to a fundamental change of aspirations from greater autonomy to secession.The work puts forward a hypothesis according to which the Catalans' pursuit of independence results more from political and economic reasons than from cultural and historical, as it is generally claimed. For the answers, there were used historical methods, in particular the analysis of source texts and observance of the chronological order of the events described, and a comparative method based on drawing conclusions by comparing the discussed phenomena.The work presents the impact of history on the current shape of Catalan identity and why it is one of the key determinants of the current striving for independence in Catalonia. However, in order to show the contemporary discourse in Catalonia associated with the vision of an independent state, a quantitative method was used in the form of public opinion polls of Catalan citizens.
