The image of Poland in the Polish ethnic in Canada

The dissertation illustrates the emergence and development of the Polish ethnic group in Canada, with particular emphasis on the development of the Polish press. Its goal is possibly the fullest examination of the image of Poland in Polish newspapers in Canada. The study of five titles was carried out throughout the quantitative and qualitative analysis. This thesis consists of theoretical and empirical part. Chapter I and II are theoretical. The first chapter is devoted to the Polish community in Canada. This chapter introduces the beginnings of Polish settlement in the lands of Canada, the main waves of Polish emigration to Canada, the beginnings of the Polish press in this country and titles appearing to date. It also contains a description of the liberal model of media in Canada, and the coexistence of the Polish press within this model. The second chapter deals with the role and functions of the ethnic press. It presents the theoretical assumptions of that press, expectations of that press and its threats.Subsequent chapters are empirical. The third contains a description of the methodology used during the research and the characteristics of the analyzed sample. It explains what is the discourse analysis and why this method is useful for this thesis. The fourth chapter is an attempt to examine the image of Poland presented in the examined Polish titles. It includes quantitative and qualitative analysis and conclusions of the study.

Praca ukazuje pojawienie się i rozwój polskiej grupy etnicznej w Kanadzie, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem prasy polonijnej. Jej celem jest możliwie najpełniejsze zbadanie wizerunku Polski kreowanego na łamach tejże prasy. W tym celu przeprowadzone zostały badania ilościowe i jakościowe pięciu tytułów ukazujących się obecnie w Kraju Klonowego Liścia. Praca składa się z części teoretycznej i empirycznej. Rozdziały I i II są teoretyczne. Pierwszy traktuje o Polonii w Kanadzie, jej początkach, rozwoju i pojawieniu się prasy. Drugi przybliża historię prasy polonijnej i obrazuje jej sytuację obecną. Kolejne rozdziały mają charakter empiryczny. Trzeci zawiera opis metodologii badań użytych w trakcie analizy. Czwarty jest próbą zbadania wizerunku Polski. Zawiera on wyniki przeprowadzonych badań.
