Tropes and truthamking. The argument for the complex nature of particular properties

Celem tej pracy jest wykazanie, że jednostkowe własności w rozumieniu williamowskiego nominalizmu muszą być bytami złożonymi, co podważa jedno z podstawowych założeń tej teorii, jakim jest postulat ontologicznej prostoty tropów. Zadaniem krytyka nominalizmu tropowego jest wskazanie, że trop pełni dwie niezależne ontologicznie funkcje, najczęściej odnosząc się do jednostkowienia oraz podobieństwa jakościowego względem innych tropów. W pracy analizowane są trzy główne odpowiedzi na ten problem: odrzucenie zasady, zgodnie z którą pełnienie niezależnych funkcji wymaga wewnętrznej złożoności, reinterpretacja pojęcia zależności oraz zanegowanie potrzeby gruntowania różnicy numerycznej.Wszystkie te podejścia okazują się jednak niewystarczające. W ostatniej części tekstu przedstawiam argument, który wskazuje, że nawet przy przyjęciu rozróżnień takich jak podział na ontologiczną formę i treść, tropy muszą uprawdziwiać zarówno relacje dokładnego, jak i niedokładnego podobieństwa. Ponieważ relacje te są niezależne i wymagają ugruntowania w treści tropu, wynika z tego więc, że trop nie może być bytem całkowicie prostym.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that individual properties, as understood in Williamian nominalism, must be complex entities, which undermines one of the fundamental assumptions of trope theory—namely, the postulate of the ontological simplicity of tropes. The task of the critic of trope nominalism is to show that a trope is responsible for two ontologically independent functions, most commonly: individuation and qualitative similarity with other tropes. This paper analyzes three main responses to this problem: the rejection of the principle that being responsible for independent functions requires internal complexity, the reinterpretation of the notion of dependence, and the denial of the need to ground numerical distinctness. All these approaches, however, turn out to be insufficient. In the final part of the text, I present an argument showing that even if we adopt distinctions such as the division between ontological form and content, tropes must account for both exact and inexact similarity relations. Since these relations are independent and must be grounded in the content of the trope, it follows that a trope cannot be a wholly simple entity.
