A STUDY OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN THREE FILM ADAPTATIONS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS PLAYS: A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF AND SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER

Celem pracy jest studium choroby psychicznej w trzech klasycznych adaptacjach utworów dramatycznych Tennessee Williamsa: Tramwaju zwanym pożądaniem Elii Kazana (1951), Kotce na gorącym, blaszanym dachu Richarda Brooksa (1958) oraz Nagle, zeszłego lata Josepha L. Mankiewicza (1959). Powyższe zagadnienie przedstawiono za pomocą analizy filmoznawczo-psychologicznej trzech płaszczyzn: chorej jednostki, chorej grupy społecznej oraz chorej instytucji. Praca prezentuje narodziny obłędu, ucieczkę w psychozę oraz insynuację zaburzeń mentalnych, ukazując brak jednoznacznych granic pomiędzy normą a patologią.

The purpose of this thesis is the study of mental illness in three classic adaptations of Tennessee Williams plays: A Streetcar Named Desire by Elia Kazan (1951), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Richard Brooks (1958) and Suddenly, Last Summer by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (1959). The above issue is shown by the film and psychological analysis on three different levels: sick individual, sick community and sick institution. The paper presents the origins of madness, the escape into psychosis and the insinuation of mental disorders, and points to the fact that there is a lack of clear boundaries between what is considered to be normal and what is considered to be pathological.
