Monumentalization of historic cemeteries in Italy and Poland

Ochrona zabytkowych nekropolii jest procesem trudnym i skomplikowanym. Specjaliści za nią odpowiedzialni stawiają wiele pytań o to, jak przeprowadzać ją w sposób prawidłowy. Celem pracy jest zbadanie czym jest tytułowa ,,monumentalizacja” cmentarzy, a postawiony problem badawczy, na podstawie określenia wartości historycznej, artystycznej, religijnej i użytkowej nekropolii, dowodzi w czym się przejawia. Istotną kwestią jest również to, czy da się ową „monumentalizację” zastosować w praktyce związanej z ochroną zabytkowych cmentarzy w Polsce. Pracę oparto zarówno na literaturze włoskiej jak i polskiej, źródłach internetowych, a także obserwacji w terenie, które dotyczą: Cimitero Monumentale w Mediolanie, Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno w Genui, Cimitero Monumentale w Bergamo, Warszawskich Powązek, Cmentarza Rakowickiego i Cmentarza przy ul. Lipowej w Lublinie. Badacz wskazuje, że każda z wymienionych nekropolii jest obiektem unikatowym, który charakteryzuje się specyficzną praktyką ochrony i zarządzania nim. Wymienione wyżej cmentarze wybrano biorąc pod uwagę ich znaczenie w dorobku kulturowym Włoch i Polski, a także ich obecność w świadomości obywateli tych państw, jako ważnych znaków ich tożsamości. Analizując stan włoskich cmentarzy, autor wskazuje na pewne środki, które mogłyby polepszyć stan polskich nekropolii. Podejmuje rozważania związane ze śmiercią, eschatologią i kulturą wskazanych państw. Wnioski z badań pozwalają na wytłumaczenie sposobu odbioru tych miejsc przez współczesne społeczeństwo, które odpowiedzialne jest za stan zachowania nekropolii. Praca to pewnego rodzaju dialog pomiędzy przeszłością, teraźniejszością i przyszłością, który pokazuje metody jakie mogłyby uchronić przed zniszczeniem i zapomnieniem polskie cmentarze.

The protection of historic necropolis is a difficult and complicated process. Specialists responsible for it, ask many questions about how to carry it out properly. The aim of the work is to examine what is the title "monumentalization" of cemeteries, and the research problem, on the basis of the historical, artistic, religious and functional value of cemeteries, put forward proves in what it manifests itself. An important issue is also whether this "monumentalization" can be applied in practice related to the protection of historic cemeteries in Poland. The work was based on both Italian and Polish literature, Internet sources, and field observations that concern: Monumental Cemetery in Milan, Monumental Cemetery in Genoa, Monumental Cemetery in Bergamo, Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw, Rakowicki Cemetery and Cemetery at Lipowa street in Lublin. The researcher indicates that each of these cemeteries is an unique object, which is characterized by a specific practice of caring for, protecting and managing it. The cemeteries mentioned above were chosen considering their importance in the cultural achievements of Italy and Poland, as well as their presence in the minds of citizens of these countries as important signs of their identity. Analyzing the state of Italian cemeteries, the author points out some measures that could improve the condition of Polish necropolises. Author undertakes considerations related to death, eschatology and culture of the indicated countries. The conclusions from the research allow to explain how this place is perceived by contemporary society, which is responsible for the state of preservation of the necropolis. Work is a kind of dialogue between the past, present and future, which indicates methods that could save Polish cemeteries from destruction and oblivion.
