Gods and Mythological Motifs in Fantasy Literature (on Selected Examples)

Praca analizuje występowanie bogów i motywów mitologicznych w utworach z gatunku fantasy. Rozpoczyna ją analiza mitu oraz psychologiczne uzasadnienie obcowania z literaturą fantastyczną. Następnie koncentruje się na zrekonstruowanym micie i mitologii Tolkiena. W dalszej części pracy analizowany jest "Fionavarski Gobelin" Guya Gavriela Kaya pod kątem bohaterów, przedstawionego świata, symboli, bogów i motywów mitologicznych. Kolejno badane są te elementy w powieści Neila Gaimana "Amerykańscy bogowie". Ostatnimi pozycjami poddanymi analizie są powieści z serii "Pan Lodowego Ogrodu" Jarosława Grzędowicza. Pracę kończy podsumowanie badań.

The thesis analyzes the presence of gods and mythological motifs in fantasy literature. It begins with an analysis of myth and a psychological justification for engaging with fantasy literature. Next, it focuses on the reconstructed myth and Tolkien's mythology. The following part of the thesis examines Guy Gavriel Kay's "The Fionavar Tapestry" in terms of its characters, depicted world, symbols, gods, and mythological motifs. Subsequently, these elements are analyzed in Neil Gaiman's novel "American Gods." The final works subjected to analysis are the novels from the "The Lord of the Ice Garden" series by Jarosław Grzędowicz. The thesis concludes with a summary of the research findings.
