Catholic narrative of the nation - ethnohistory in the space of the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary Star of New Evangelization and St John Paul II in Toruń

Sanktuarium Maryi Gwiazdy Nowej Ewangelizacji i św. Jana Pawła II w Toruniu jest jedną z największych realizacji na polu sztuki sakralnej w Polsce ostatnich dekad. Ta sfinansowana z ofiar członków wspólnoty skupionej wokół kompleksu medialnego ojca Tadeusza Rydzyka świątynia uznana być może za pomnik i zarazem manifest ideowy tego środowiska. Na rozbudowany program obrazowo-słowny składają się rozpoznawalne klisze, obrazy i toposy zakorzenione w tradycji obrazowania polskości. Zwizualizowane za ich pomocą idee stanowią kontynuację historiozoficznej koncepcji, wykrystalizowanej przy okazji obchodów polskiego milenium. Ta opowieść, oparta na przekonaniu o nierozerwalnym związku katolicyzmu i narodu polskiego, prezentowanego jako kierowany przez Opatrzność aktor historii zbawienia, ufundowana jest na myśli polskich romantyków. W XX wieku pełny kształt nadał jej Oskar Halecki, a rozwinięcie i upowszechnienie zawdzięcza nauczaniu Stefana Wyszyńskiego oraz opracowaniu teologii narodu tego ostatniego przez współczesnych teologów.

The Shrine of Mary the Star of the New Evangelization and St. John Paul II in Toruń is among the greatest projects in the field of sacred art, that has been undertaken in Poland in recent decades. This temple, financed by the donations of the members of the community gathered around the media complex of Father Tadeusz Rydzyk, may be considered a monument and an ideological manifesto of this circle. The extensive iconographic programme consists of clichés, images and topoi, that are rooted in the tradition of depicting Polishness. The ideas visualised by them stem from the historiosophical concept which crystallized on the occasion of the Polish Millennium celebrations. This philosophy of history, based on the conviction about the inseparable link between Catholicism and the Polish nation, presented as an actor of salvation history led by Providence, is founded on the thought of Polish Romantics. In the 20th century Oskar Halecki gave it its full shape, and it owes its development and dissemination to the teaching of Stefan Wyszyński and the studies of latter's theology of nation researchers.
