Po wojnach perskich Grecy zbudowali swe poczucie tożsamości w oparciu o antytezę do obrazu cywilizacji Wschodu reprezentowanego przez imperium perskie. Myślenie w kategoriach opozycji pomiędzy wolnością a niewolnictwem wiąże się z wykorzystaniem odpowiedniego wizerunku „barbarzyńców”; odpowiedniego obrazu dostarcza literatura grecka V w. p.n.e. Kolejne pokolenie przyjęło ową koncepcję dodając do niech nowe elementy. W artykule zajmuję się obrazem Persów w "Panegiryku" Izokratesa, zwłaszcza passusem 150-152. Celem analizy jest pokazanie nawiązań do stereotypu zakorzenionego, głownie dzięki Herodotowi, w greckim dyskursie politycznym, oraz elementów dodanych przez Izokratesa. Chciałbym również wykazać, iż negatywny wizerunek barbarzyńców jest u Izokratesa całkowicie podporządkowany nadrzędnej idei panhelleńskiej wyprawy przeciw Persom, która ma w jego stanowić jedyne remedium na konflikty pomiędzy Grekami.

After Persian Wars the Greeks developed their sense of identity as an antithesis to the image of the civilization of the East represented by the Achaemenid empire. This extremely useful framework, based on the opposition between freedom and slavery, implies the suitable image of the “barbarians”; the adequate vision was provided by the literature of the V century BC. The next generation enhanced the concept by adding new characteristics. In this paper I would like to focus on the image of the Persians devised by Isocrates in his "Panegyricus", especially in the passage 150-152. The aim of the analysis is to show the references to the stereotype rooted in the Greek political discourse (due mainly to Herodotus), as well as the elements added to the vision by Isocrates. I would also like to emphasize the purely utilitarian character of this pejorative picture. I would like to argue that this negative vision was entirely subordinated to the idea of the panhellenic expedition against Persia, which was promoted by Isocrates as the best and only way to put an end to the wars between the Greeks by offering them the common goal.
