"To restore the voice". Aspects of institutional violence in Zbigniew Herbert's essays

Niniejsza praca prezentuje zagadnienie instytucjonalnej przemocy w eseistyce Zbigniewa Herberta. Analizując teksty z trzech głównych tomów "Barbarzyńcy w ogrodzie", "Martwej natury z wędzidłem" oraz "Labiryntu nad morzem" wykazano, że owa przemoc realizuje się na dwóch poziomach: na linii relacji jednostka-instytucja oraz silny aktor-słaby aktor na arenie międzynarodowej. Metodologiczną ramę pracy stanowią rozważania nad politycznością życiorysu autora oraz pozycją podmiotu w eseistyce. Analiza i interpretacja tekstów literackich dowodzi, że refleksja Herberta zawarta w esejach wpisuje się w zagadnienie potencjalności literatury, przedmiotem zainteresowania autora „Barbarzyńcy w ogrodzie” są przegrani. Zestawienie twórczości Herberta z tekstami z zakresu filozofii polityki pozwoliło udowodnić krytyczny stosunek podmiotu esejów do politycznych dokonań cywilizacji europejskiej, co z kolei wpisuje dzieła autora „Labiryntu nad morzem” w XX-wieczne rozważania filozoficzno-literackie na temat politycznej kondycji państw Starego Kontynentu oraz uwikłania jednostek w sferę polityczności.

This paper presents the issue of institutional violence in Zbigniew Herbert's essays. Analysing the texts from the three main volumes, „Barbarian in the Garden”, „Still Life with a Bridle” and „Labyrinth by the Sea”, it has been shown that this violence is realised on two levels: on the line of the individual-institutional relationship and the strong actor-weak actor in the international arena. The methodological framework of the work is a reflection on the politicality of the author's biography and the position of the subject in the essays. The analysis and interpretation of literary texts proves that Herbert's reflections contained in the essays are part of the issue of the potentiality of literature, the object of interest of the author of „Barbarian in the Garden” are the losers. The juxtaposition of Herbert's work with texts in the field of political philosophy made it possible to prove the critical attitude of the subject of the essays to the political achievements of European civilisation, which in turn inscribes the works of the author of „The Labyrinth by the Sea” into 20th-century philosophical and literary reflections on the political condition of the states of the Old Continent and the entanglement of individuals in the sphere of politicality.
