“Det här är inte någon jävla pusseldeckare”. A generic analysis of Stieg Larsson’s novel Män som hatar kvinnor

Celem pracy jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób powieść Stiega Larssona Män som hatar kvinnor, wpisuje się w ramy gatunkowe powieści kryminalnej. Autorka skupiła się na badaniu, jakie konwencje tego gatunku, jak oraz w jakim stopniu realizuje jeden z największych szwedzkich bestsellerów. Zastosowana metoda badawcza ma podstawy w teorii gatunku literackiego i narratologii i oparta jest głównie na pojęciu gatunku literackiego w rozumieniu Alastaira Fowlera oraz na modelu narratologicznym Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. W pracy ukazane zostały cechy powieści kryminalnej występujące na płaszczyźnie historii w rozumieniu narratologicznym. W rozdziale teoretycznym przedstawiono stosowane w pracy pojęcie gatunku literackiego, krótką historię i charakterystykę literatury kryminalnej oraz zaprezentowano materiał badawczy i wybrane elementy narratologii. W rozdziale analitycznym przebadano podstawowe elementy historii: intrygę, postacie, czas oraz miejsce akcji. Ostatni rozdział zawiera podsumowanie, wnioski końcowe oraz perspektywy dalszych badań materiału.

The purpose of the thesis was to study in what way does Stieg Larsson’s novel Män som hatar kvinnor fall into the pattern of crime novel. The author focuses on researching which genre conventions, and to what extent, have been carried through in one of the best-selling Swedish books of all-time. The method of inquiry has its roots in the theory of literary genre and narratology thus it has been based mainly on Alastair Fowler’s conception of genre and on narratological model proposed by Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan. The thesis portrays the crime fiction attributes which occur in the novel in terms of story within the meaning of narratology. The theoretical part of the study covers the subject of a concept behind genre, short history and characteristic of crime fiction as well as a presentation of the research material and selected problems of the narratology domain. The analytical part contains of research about basic elements of story: plot, characters and time and setting. The last chapter provides with summary, conclusions and prospect of future research.
