Faith in the ascetic writings of Tertullian.

Moją pracę poświeciłem zagadnieniu wiary (fides) w pismach ascetyczno-parenetycznych Tertuliana. Ma ona na celu zaprezentować, jak wielkie znaczenie dla tego autora ma wiara w życiu chrześcijańskiej gminy oraz pojedynczego ochrzczonego.W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiam pojęcie fides, funkcjonujące w świecie przedchrześcijańskim, zwracając szczególną uwagę na kontekst religijny. Następnie przechodzę do charakterystyki Tertuliana, zastanawiając się, jakie czynniki wywarły największy wpływ na jego bezkompromisową postawę oraz dosadny sposób pisania. W kolejnym rozdziale przedstawiam, co składa się na kluczowe pojęcie dla Kartagińczyka, jakim jest regula fidei. Przechodzę wreszcie do jego dzieł związanych z ascezą i parenezą. Podzieliłem je na kilka grup, dotyczących różnych zagadnień i problemów kartagińskiej gminy, jak np. kwestia prześladowań czy rola kobiet w Kościele. W każdym z podrozdziałów przedstawiam rozwiązania Tertuliana oraz jego zalecenia odnośnie zachowania pełni wiary. Każde z poruszonych zagadnień ściśle łączy się z wiarą, co jest okazją dla Tertuliana, aby ją charakteryzować i przedstawiać za pomocą ciekawych opisów. Praca udowadnia, że pojęcie fides, jest dla Tertuliana kluczowe i na nim buduje całą swoją argumentację. Daje również okazję do przyjrzenia się, w których miejscach i w jaki sposób używa samego słowa fides.

This dissertation is dedicated to the question of faith (fides) in the writings of Tertullian. Its purpose is to present how crucially important the author considered faith to be in the life of both Christian community and a single baptized person.In the first chapter the term fides is presented, as functioning in the pre-Christian world especially in religious context. The next part is a portrayal of Tertullian, with reflection on what factors were of the formative influence on his uncompromising attitude and straightforward way of writing. The following chapter the components of regula fidei are described - a key term for the Carthaginian. In the end the writings on asceticism are presented. They were divided into several groups connected with various issues and problems of a Carthaginian community, e.g. the question of persecutions or the role of a woman in Church. In each of the subsections Tertullian’s solutions and his counsel on how to retain the fullness and clarity of faith is given. Each of the issues raised is closely connected with faith, which provides Tertullian with the opportunity to describe it in an appealing way.In the following dissertation it is proven that fides is a key term for Tertullian and his whole reasoning is built on it. Moreover, the use of the very word fides is closely examined.
