Nietzsche i Arendt używają metafory jaskini, by zobrazować kondycję współczesnego człowieka, jego kultury i tradycji. Oboje podobnie definiują pustynię oraz przyczyny jej pojawienia się i ekspansji. Pojawiające się między nimi różnice pozwalają spojrzeć na interesujący ich problem z odmiennych punktów widzenia. Ważne jest przy tym, że podobieństwa są na tyle istotne, że możemy mieć pewność, iż mówimy o tej samej rzeczy. Choć oboje mówią o pustyni w kontekście katastrofalnych wydarzeń, uważają, że ostatecznie pustynnienie nie tylko uderza w nas z zewnątrz, ale ujawnia również prawdę o nas samych. U jego źródeł odkrywają bowiem resentyment wobec rzeczywistości, chęć ucieczki od niej i odmowę wzięcia za nią odpowiedzialności, stwierdzając jednocześnie, że siły te w dużej mierze kształtowały naszą tradycję. Dzisiaj jednak tradycja ta dobiega kresu, czemu towarzyszy upadek opartej na niej moralności. Według Nietzschego i Arendt stwarza to nie tylko katastrofalne zagrożenie, ale również szansę. Szansę na przemianę, spowodowaną zrozumieniem, że ostatecznie to od nas zależy, kim jesteśmy oraz czym jest świat wokół nas.

Nietzsche and Arendt use the metaphor of a desert to illustrate the condition of modern man, his culture and tradition. Both define the desert and the reasons for its appearance and expansion in a similar way. The differences that emerge between them allow us to look at the problem they are interested in from different points of view. Although both talk about the desert in the context of catastrophic events, they believe that ultimately desertification not only hits us from the outside, but also reveals the truth about ourselves. At its source, they discover resentment towards reality, the desire to escape from it and the refusal to take responsibility for it, stating at the same time that these forces have largely shaped our tradition. Today, however, this tradition is coming to an end, which is accompanied by the collapse of the morality based on it. According to Nietzsche and Arendt, this creates not only a catastrophic threat, but also an opportunity. A chance for transformation, caused by the understanding that ultimately it depends on us who we are and what the world around us is.
