Elections to land offices (election sejmiks) in the Ukrainian provinces during the exile

Historycy mało miejsca poświęcali sejmikom elekcyjnym, mimo że prawo wyboru kandydatów na urzędy ziemskie było jednym z najstarszych uprawnień zgromadzeń szlacheckich. Szlachta uzyskała je już w XV w., co zostało potem potwierdzone w konstytucjach. Sejmiki elekcyjne na Litwie wprowadzono w II Statucie. Obywatele ziem inkorporowanych do Korony w 1569 r. przejęli większość zwyczajów koronnych. W drugiej połowie XVII w. sejmiki województw ukrainnych zbierały się na wygnaniu. Elekcje odbywały się, mimo że podczas wygnania sądy ziemskie tych województw nie funkcjonowały.

Historians have paid little attention to election sejmiks, even though the right to elect candidates for land offi ces was one of the oldest powers of assemblies of the nobility. They had obtained this right already in the fifteenth century, which was later confirmed by constitutions. Election sejmiks were introduced to Lithuania by the Second Statute. The citizens of the lands incorporated into the Crown in 1569 adopted most of the Crown customs. In the second half of the seventeenth century, sejmiks of the Ukrainian provinces gathered in exile. Elections took place even though the land courts of these provinces did not function during the exile.
