Empowerment of women in "The tongue’s blood does not run dry : Algerian stories" by Assia Djebar

Artykuł przedstawia sposoby upodmiotawiania postaci kobiecych w zbiorze opowiadań "Oran, martwy język" (Oran, langue morte) autorstwa Assi Djebar. Wychodząc od określenia specyficznych problemów frankofońskiej literatury Maghrebu oraz twórczości Djebar, zauważyć można, że obecne są w nich zagadnienia dotyczące relacji kolonizujący-kolonizowany, wielojęzyczności i emancypacji kobiet. W analizowanym zbiorze narratorki odzyskują swoją podmiotowość dzięki możliwości opowiedzenia własnej historii i ujawnienia prawdy, metaforycznie określanej jako „zrzucenie zasłony”. Co ważne to język francuskiego kolonizatora, kojarzony do tej pory z mechanizmami opresji, staje się dla nich przestrzenią swobodnej wypowiedzi.

The article presents the ways of female characters’ empowering in the collection of short stories titled The Tongue’s Blood does not run dry: Algerian Stories by Assia Djebar. Starting from the definition of the specific problems of the Francophone literature of the Maghreb as well as of the work of Djebar, the presence of such issues as the colonizer-colonized relation, multilingualism or emancipation of women can be noticed. In the analyzed collection, female narrators regain their subjectivity thanks to the possibility of telling their own story and revealing the truth, metaphorically referred to as “the unveiling”. What is important, it is the language of the French colonizer, associated until then with the mechanisms of oppression, that becomes for them a space of free expression.
