Czerwień Towns. The history of research in the light of the latest archaeological discoveries

Praca dotyczy problemu badawczego rubieży granicznej Polski i Rusi Kijowskiej na przełomie X i XI wieku. W centrum rozważań znajduje się pytanie o najważniejsze skupiska ludzkie tego pogranicza, zwane w literaturze Grodami Czerwieńskimi. Praca referuje historię badań tego tematu skupiając się na stosunkach politycznych i etnicznych omawianego regionu w momencie formacyjnym państw Piastów i Rurykowiczów.W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono źródła historyczne do tematu. Najważniejszym z nich jest pierwsza kronika ruska, zwana "Powieścią minionych lat", przypisywana kronikarzowi Nestorowi. Z racji na skąpą ilość źródeł możliwe było enumeratywne ich wyliczenie i dodanie krótkiego ich opisu. W drugiej części rozdziału opisano również źródła archeologiczne, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem najnowszych odkryć.W rozdziale drugim przedstawiono kilka najważniejszych koncepcji dotyczących Grodów Czerwieńskich, ich postulowanego zasięgu terytorialnego i mieszkańców. Przedstawiono koncepcje wysuwane przez badaczy w przeciągu wieku XX a szczególną uwagę skupiono na plemieniu Lędzian.Rozdział trzeci zawiera koncepcję własną autora dotyczącą stosunków etniczno-politycznych na omawianym terytorium a następnie referuje stan szerszych politycznych stosunków polsko-ruskich na przełomie X i XI a także w ciągu XI wieku. Autorska analiza jest wspomagana częściowo przez własnoręcznie edytowane mapy.

The dissertation engages with the topic of a borderland between Poland and Kievan Rus' on the verge of 10th and 11th century. The most important question centres around the settlements of that territory, named in the literature as "Czerwień Towns". The thesis refers the history of a research carried out in this field focusing on political and ethnic relations in the said region in the moment of formation of both Piast and Rurikid states.The first chapter descibes historical sources refering to the topic. The most important of those has to be the Primary Chronicle of the Rus', known as "Tale of Bygone Years", assigned to annalist Nestor. Because of the scarce number of sources it was possible to enumerate them all and add a short description. The second part of the chapter portrays the archeological sources on the topic, with the particular emphasis put on the newest discoveries.The second chapter presents the most significant 20th century ideas concerning Czerwień Towns, including their postulated territory and inhabitants. The particular focus was given to the Lendians/Lędzianie tribe.In the third section the author's own idea on ethnic-political relations on given territory is presented. It precedes the analyse of the whole scope of Polish-Ruthenian relations over 10th and 11th century which is to be found in the second part of the chapter. The whole analysis is illustrated by the set of maps, some self-edited.
