From a Slave in the Harem to the Influential Sultana. Powerful Women of the Ottoman Empire.

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest sułtanat kobiet w Imperium Osmańskim. Okres rządów kobiet okazał się bardzo ważny w historii Osmanów. Miał ogromny wpływ na przyszłość państwa i dynastii. Praca skupia się na analizie zmian zachodzących w myśleniu niewolnic haremu oraz na ich rosnącym zaangażowaniu w politykę i ekonomię państwa. W 1520 roku do pałacu w Stambule trafia rudowłosa Roksolana. Nikt nie spodziewa się, że ta piętnastoletnia dziewczyna przełamie istniejące od stuleci tradycje. Roksolana przekracza wszystkie granice- kulturowe, religijne, niewolnicze i patriarchalne. Jest wzorem do naśladowania dla następnych pokoleń niewolnic. Kolejne władczynie haremu z powodzeniem sięgają po władzę, tym samym wzmacniając pozycję kobiet. Wraz z rosnącą siłą sułtanek, słabnie potęga władców. Wielkie imperium trafia pod skrzydła kobiet próbujących kształtować nową rzeczywistość w pałacu Topkapy. Istotna rola sułtanek kończy się w 1656 roku, gdy ostatnia z potężnych kobiet- Tuhan Hatidże decyduje się dla dobra państwa oddać władzę w ręce wezyra oraz sułtana.

The thesis concentrates on the subject of The Sultanate of Women. The period of women's rule was very important in the history of the Ottoman Empire. This period had a huge influence on a future of the state and dynasty. The thesis focuses on analysis of changes, which have born in slaves’ way of thinking in harem and also on their increasing political and economic engagement. In 1520 redheaded Roxolana arrived at the palace in Istanbul. No one anticipated that this fifteen-years-old girl may break centuries-old traditions. She crossed all boundaries - cultural, religous, slave and patriarchal. She was a role model for the next generations of slaves. Next female rulers of the harem reached for a power and strengthened position of women. With an increasing power of women, importance of men weakened. The vast empire got under a control of women, who were trying to shape a new reality in the Topkapy palace. An important role of women has ended in 1656, when the last of powerful women- Turhan Hatice decided to return an authority for a good cause of the Empire to a vezir and sultan.
