Polish and French first names: their origins and meanings

Niniejsza praca magisterska zatytułowana Imiona polskie i francuskie: ich pochodzenie i znaczenie jest próbą zebrania różnorakich teorii językoznawczych dotyczących nazw własnych, mającą na celu możliwość przeanalizowania nazw własnych pod najszerszym możliwym kątem. Pierwsza część poświęcona jest nazwom własnym jako dziedzinie nauki, jest zbiorem istotnych informacji o tym dziale lingwistyki. W drugim rozdziale można znaleźć kilka teorii językoznawczych przedstawionych z punktu widzenia innych dziedzin nauki, m.in filozofii. Ostatnia część jest przedstawieniem wybranych imion, które są nadawane dzieciom w Polsce i we Francji. Zostały one podzielone na 11 grup ze względu na ich etymologię m.in na imiona łacińskie, greckie i słowiańskie.Wybrałam po kilka imion z każdej z grup i zamieściłam w pracy informację o ich pochodzeniu i znaczeniu. Na zakończenie, w ramach ciekawostki stworzyłam tabelkę w której znajduje się lista 50 męskich i żeńskich imion nadawanych najczęściej w Polsce i we Francji w 2018 roku.

This master’s thesis entitled Polish and French first names: their origins and meanings is an attempt to collect various linguistic theories regarding proper names in order to be able to analyze first names from the widest possible perspective. The first part of this work is devoted to the proper name as a field of science. It is a collection of essential information on this branch of linguistics. In the second chapter one can find some theories on proper names from the point of view of different fields of science, among others philosophy. The last part is the presentation of some first names used in Poland and France. They were divided into eleven groups according to their origins: Slavic, Latin, Greek names etc. Each group is represented by several first names with their origins and etymology. At the end of the master's thesis there is a list of the most popular male and female first names in Poland and France in 2018.

Ce mémoire de maîtrise intitulé Prénoms polonais et français : leurs origines et significations est une tentative de recueillir diverses théories linguistiques sur les noms propres afin de pouvoir analyser les prénoms dans la perspective la plus large possible. La première partie de ce travail est consacrée au nom propre comme domaine de la science. C’est un recueil des informations essentielles sur cette branche de la linguistique. Dans le deuxième chapitre on peut trouver quelques théorie sur les noms propres du point de vue de différents domaines de la science, entre autres la philosophie. La dernière partie est la présentation de certains prénoms utilisés en Pologne et en France. Ils ont été divisés en onze groupes selon leurs origines : prénoms slaves, latins, grecs etc. Chaque groupe est représenté par quelques prénoms avec leurs origines et leur étymologie. À la fin du mémoire de maîtrise il y a une liste des prénoms masculins et féminins les plus donnés en Pologne et en France en 2018.
