Designates and semantic functions of the Turkish words sultan ‘sultan’ and padişah ‘padishah’

Temat pracy obejmuje opracowanie na podstawie zgromadzonego materiału leksykalnego dwóch wyrazów obecnych w języku tureckim związanych z zagadnieniem sułtanatu: sultan ‘sułtan’, będący zapożyczeniem z języka arabskiego i padişah ‘padyszach’ ‒ z języka perskiego, które nazywają głowę państwa w Imperium Osmańskim. Materiał leksykalny zawierał derywaty utworzone od wspomnianych wyrazów, a także związki wyrazowe oraz przysłowia. Materiał poddano analizie formalnej i semantycznej. W pracy zostały zawarte również informacje dotyczące występowania tytułów sultan i padişah w świecie muzułmańskim.

The topic of the thesis includes a study, based on the collected lexical material, of two words present in Turkish related to the issue of the sultanate: sultan ‘sultan’, which is a borrowing from Arabic, and padişah ‘padishah’ – from Persian, which both name the head of state in the Ottoman Empire. The lexical material included derivatives formed from the root of the mentioned words, as well as word compounds and proverbs. The material was analysed in respect of structure and semantics. The thesis also includes information concerning the occurrence of sultan and padişah titles in the Muslim world.
