Pyotr Masherov (The secrets of his life and death)

The purpose of this paper is an attempt to present the life of Pyotr Masherov, a well-known Belorussian communist activist, who was the first secretary of the Communist Party of Belarus between 1965 and 1980.The first chapter describes Masherov’s background, childhood and early youth.Pyotr Masherov was born on February 26, 1918 in the village of Szyrki in Mohylev province, in a peasant family. In the years 1934-1939 he studied at Pedagogical Institute in Vitebsk. At that time, in 1937, his father was arrested and died in a prison a few months later. After graduation, Masherov was working as a teacher in Rossony, until the outbreak of war in 1939.Right after Germany invaded the Soviet Union Masherov joined the army as a volunteer and was soon captured, but managed to escape in four days. Since 1942 he actively fought the occupying forces, at first commanding an army unit, and then a guerilla brigade. In 1944 he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.After the war, between 1946-1954 Mashereov was working in Komsomol structures. In 1954 he became the vice secretary of district party committee in Minsk and in the years 1955-1959 he was appointed to the post of the first secretary of district party committee in Brest. From 1959 to 1956 Masherov was the vice secretary of the Communist Party of Belarus. In March, 1965 he took the post of the first secretary.The second chapter contains a description of Belarus under the rule of Masherov. It was the time of rising economy and development of various branches of industry as well as agriculture. The standard of living was getting higher along with flourishing culture, science and sports.The third chapter is an attempt to reconstruct the death of Pyotr Masherov in the car accident which happened on 4 October 1980. It includes recollections of his family members, associates and eyewitnesses of the tragedy. Different accounts of the event are also presented. Pyotr Masherov was one of a kind in history of the USSR. He proved allegiance to his country not by words, but by deeds and truly did a lot for Belarus. He was a brave partisan, charismatic leader and a favourite of the masses. If he hadn’t died tragically, perhaps history of the whole Soviet Union would have turned out differently.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest próba przedstawienia biografii znanego białoruskiego działacza partyjnego, Piotra Maszerowa, który w latach 1965-1980 piastował urząd I sekretarza Komunistycznej Partii Białorusi.W rozdziale pierwszym opisane jest pochodzenie, dzieciństwo i wczesna młodość Maszerowa. Piotr Maszerow urodził się 26 lutego 1918 r. we wsi Szyrki w guberni mohylewskiej, (obecnie obwód witebski), w rodzinie chłopskiej. W latach 1934-1939 studiował w Instytucie Pedagogicznym w Witebsku. Podczas studiów, w roku 1937, aresztowano jego ojca, który kilka miesięcy później zmarł w więzieniu. Po ukończeniu studiów, Maszerow pracował jako nauczyciel w szkole w miejscowości Rossony, aż do wybuchu wojny.Tuż po agresji Niemiec na ZSRR, Maszerow jako ochotnik idzie na front, jednak wkrótce dostaje się do niewoli, z której udaje mu się zbiec po czterech dniach. Od 1942 r. Maszerow aktywnie walczy z okupantem, jako dowódca najpierw oddziału, a później brygady partyzanckiej. W 1944 otrzymał on tytuł Bohatera ZSRR. Po wojnie, w latach 1946-1954, Maszerow pracował w Komsomole. W 1954r. został on II sekretarzem obwodowego komitetu partii w Mińsku, a w latach 1955-1959 pełnił funkcję I sekretarza obwodowego komitetu partii w Brześciu. Od 1959 do 1965 roku Maszerow był II sekretarzem KC KPB. W marcu 1965, został I sekretarzem.W rozdziale II przedstawiona jest Białoruś pod rządami Maszerowa. W tym czasie wzrasta tempo rozwoju gospodarczego. Rozwija się przemysł, budownictwo, rolnictwo. Rośnie poziom życia ludności. Rozwija się kultura, nauka, sport.Rozdział III to próba rekonstrukcji wypadku, który zdarzył się 4 października 1980 r. i w którym zginął Piotr Maszerow. Zamieszczone są tu wspomnienia rodziny, współpracowników Maszerowa oraz świadków tragedii. Przedstawione są też różne wersje tego wydarzenia. Piotr Maszerow był postacią unikatową w historii całego ZSRR. Potrafił on udowodnić swoją wierność krajowi, nie słowami, lecz czynami. Zrobił bardzo wiele dla Białorusi. Był odważnym partyzantem, charyzmatycznym liderem i ulubieńcem ludu. Gdyby nie jego tragiczna śmierć, możliwe że historia całego Związku Radzieckiego mogłaby potoczyć się zupełnie inaczej.
