Images of Istanbul in the Literature of Ottoman Armenians.

Niniejsza praca jest próbą analizy literatury Ormian mieszkających w Imperium Osmańskim na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Zbadanych pod kątem jakościowym zostało łącznie 15 utworów: od wspomnień i autobiografii, poprzez nowele, aż po krótkie formy i opowiadania. Wśród autorów znaleźli się najsłynniejsi reprezentanci prozy ormiańskiej: Zabel Jesajan, Hagop Baronian, Krikor Zohrab, Jerwant Odian i inni. Autorka przedstawia analizę z pogranicza studiów literackich i miejskich – celem jest bowiem odtworzenie obrazów Stambułu, jakie budowali ormiańscy pisarze. Dzięki dogłębnej analizie utworów udało się zaobserwować stosunki społeczne w ówczesnym Stambule i stworzyć portrety życia codziennego w osmańskiej stolicy. W literaturze podmiotu odnaleźć można również obrazy miasta, przedstawianego często bardzo dychotomicznie – jako raju na ziemi, ale też jako chaotycznej metropolii. Wreszcie, zagłębiając się w lekturę, czytelnik może odtworzyć ważne dla Ormian miejsca na mapie Stambułu. Wizja miasta i jego legenda, prezentowane w literaturze XIX i XX wieku, przetrwały do dziś w umysłach Ormian, dla których Stambuł pozostaje kolebką ich kultury.

This thesis serves as an introduction to the analysis of the literature of Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire at the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century. A qualitative analysis was applied to 15 works: from memoirs and autobiographies through novellas to short stories. Their authors include the most renowned representatives of Armenian prose: Zabel Yessayan, Hagop Baronian, Krikor Zohrab, Yervant Odian and others. The analysis combines literature and urban studies – the aim of the authors was to present how Armenians used to write about the city and what the objective of such “portraits” was. Thanks to in-depth analysis it was possible to observe interesting social relations in the Ottoman capital. The analysed literature is also full of images of the city itself, which are at times very polarised: sometimes describing a paradise, sometimes a chaotic metropolis. Finally, the reader can recreate a map of locations that were most important for the Armenians. The image and the legend of the city presented in those works are still vivid in the collective imaginary of today’s Armenians, who perceive Istanbul as the cradle of their culture.
