The Proto-Indo-European tradition of a riddle agon

Niniejsza praca skupia się na zjawisku agonu zagadkowego w kontekście kultur indoeuropejskich oraz powiązaną z nim rolą poety w tych wspólnotach. Punktem wyjścia do przedstawionych hipotez były rozważania lingwistów: Toshifumi Gotô i Joshui T. Katza. Pojedynek na zagadki rozpatrywany jest zatem przede wszystkim z perspektywy językoznawstwa historyczno-porównawczego. Następnie przedstawione zostały przykłady agonu enigmatycznego zachowane w najstarszych zabytkach literackich opisywanych ludów: w tym przekazy zawarte w Rigwedzie, Aweście czy Eddzie poetyckiej. Praca ta stara się odpowiedzieć na pytanie o pochodzenie zjawiska walki na zagadki wśród Indoeuropejczyków oraz przygląda się funkcji poety jako wojownika. Ponadto, wyodrębnia cechy charakterystyczne takich pojedynków, które można zaobserwować w poszczególnych tradycjach indoeuropejskich, by później sprawdzić podobieństwa i różnice występujące między tymi wspólnotami. W podsumowaniu przedstawiono argumenty przemawiające za hipotezą praindoeuropejskich korzeni fenomenu agonu zagadkowego i wiążącą się z nim rolą poety – wojownika.

This paper focuses on the phenomenon of a riddle agon in the context of Indo-European cultures and its relation to the role of a poet in these communities. The starting point for the presented hypotheses were the ideas of two linguists: Toshifumi Gotô and Joshua T. Katz. Thus, an enigma duel is examined primarily from the perspective of historical and comparative linguistics. Next, examples of a riddle contest preserved in the oldest literary works of the described peoples are presented: including texts of the Rigveda, Avesta or Poetic Edda. This work seeks to answer the question of the origin of the phenomenon of riddle duels among the Indo-Europeans and analyses the function of a poet as a warrior. In addition, it describes the characteristics of such duels that can be observed in the various Indo-European traditions, to later examine the similarities and differences between these communities. In conclusion arguments are presented in favour of the hypothesis of the Proto-Indo-European roots of a riddle contest and the associated role of a poet-warrior.
