(Auto)biographical experience of grief. Inga Iwasiów "He passed Away. The diary of Mourning" and Marcin Wicha "Things, I didn’t throw out"

Głównym celem pracy jest zbadanie zachowania jednostki w obliczu śmierci drugiego człowieka. Obszar badań został zawężony do świadectw śmierci rodzica w literaturze polskiej po roku 1989, na podstawie książki Ingi Iwasiów Umarł mi. Notatnik żałoby (2013) oraz Marcina Wichy Rzeczy, których nie wyrzuciłem (2017). Analiza opiera się o interpretację różnorodnego pojmowania śmierci, zachowań żałobnych oraz aspektów wpływających na sposób doświadczania żałoby, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przemian zachodzących wewnątrz tego dyskursu. W pracy zostały przedstawione i skonfrontowane ze sobą dwie jednostkowe strategie (auto)biograficzne, opisujące sytuację osobistą i indywidualną – każdy z autorów znajduje własny język oraz sposób na przeżywanie żałoby – kreśląc jednocześnie uniwersalny psychologiczny portret człowieka wobec śmierci i współczesnych rytuałów pogrzebowych. Analiza została skoncentrowana na sposobie od-tworzenia biografii zmarłych, za pośrednictwem wspomnień o nich na różnych etapach żałoby oraz stworzenia międzypokoleniowych powiązań pomiędzy podmiotami osieroconymi i pozostałościami materialnymi stanowiącymi ekwiwalenty życia rodziców. Praca próbuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie: w jaki sposób odnaleźć miejsce dla zmarłego oraz jaką rolę, w procesie przeżywania żałoby, spełnia literatura.

The main aim of the article is to examine the human’s attitude towards the other’s death. The field of research was limited to the death testimony of a parent in Polish literature after 1989, based on the book written by Inga Iwasiów He passed Away. The diary of Mourning (2013) and Marcina Wichy Things, I didn’t throw away (2017). The analysis is based on the interpretation of various concepts of death, funeral behaviour and aspects affecting the overwork of mourning, with particularly regard to developments within this discourse. The work presents and confronts two individual (auto)biographical strategies that describe the personal and individual situation – each of the authors find their own language and way of experiencing grief – while at the same time drawing a universal psychological portrait of the human being in relation to the last things and modern burial rituals. The analysis was focused on the way in which the biographies of the deceased can be created by memories of them in the different phases of grief, and on the creation of intergenerational connections between the orphaned subjects and the material remains corresponding to the lives of the parents. The work tries to answer the question of how to find a suitable place for the deceased and what role literature plays in the grieving process.
