Cinematic Possessions. The Demons of Loudun on the Big Screen

Opętanie jest zjawiskiem powszechnym, występującym, w różnych zakątkach świata i towarzyszącym człowiekowi już od czasów prehistorycznych. Nie dziwi więc fakt, że temat opętania stał się w końcu obiektem zainteresowania ze strony twórców kultury. Najlepiej zadomowił się on w formie demonicznego zniewolenia, w utworach spod szyldu horroru. Egzorcysta Williama Friedkina wprowadził opętanie do kanonu kina grozy w 1973 roku i od tej pory stał się on domeną tego gatunku filmowego. Zanim to jednak nastąpiło powstały dwa autorskie dzieła wykorzystujące ten motyw– Matka Joanna od Aniołów Jerzego Kawalerowicza oraz Diabły Kena Russella. Obydwa odwołujące się do tego samego historycznego wydarzenia – rzekomego siedemnastowiecznego zniewolenia zakonnic z Loudun we Francji.W pracy tej spróbuję krótko nakreślić charakterystykę horrorów wykorzystujących tematykę demonicznego opętania ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Egzorcysty jako filmu inaugurującego ten podgatunek. Następnie poddam głębszej analizie Matkę Joannę od Aniołów i Diabły oraz skupię się na charakterze, jaki przybiera w nich diabelskie zawładnięcie. Rozdziały te poprzedzę częścią teoretyczną, w której przybliżę antropologiczne, teologiczne oraz psychopatologiczne ujęcie zjawiska opętania.

Possession is a widespread phenomenon, occurring in various parts of the world and accompanying man since prehistoric times. It is not surprising, then, that the subject of possession has finally become an object of interest for the writers and film makers. It settled best in the form of demonic possession, in texts belonging to the genre of horror. William Friedkin's The Exorcist introduced possession into the canon of horror cinema in 1973, and has since become the domain of this film genre. Before that, however, two original works using this motif were created - Mother Joan of the Angels by Jerzy Kawalerowicz and The Devils by Ken Russell. Both referring to the same historical event - the alleged seventeenth-century possession of nuns from Loudun in France.In this thesis I will try to briefly describe the characteristics of horrors that use the subject of demonic possession, with particular emphasis on The Exorcist as the film inaugurating this subgenre. Next, I will analyze Mother Joan of the Angels and The Devils in more depth and focus on the character of possession in them. These chapters will be preceded by the theoretical part presenting the anthropological, theological and psychopathological approach to the phenomenon of possession.
