The aim of this article is to discern the presence of female art students at foreign universities and private institutions, such as the prestigious Académie Julian, where the lives of two female painters and diarists, Marie Bashkirtseff and Anna Bilińska, were intertwined. The struggle for recognition of their status as professional artists was linked to the significance of the space of the atelier itself, which was explored as the realisation of "a room of one's own" and as the place of a nascent community of female artists.
