Płynne życia, płynne miłości: Millenialsi w twórczości Sally Rooney

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza bohaterów należących do pokolenia Millenialsów występujących w trzech powieściach irlandzkiej pisarki Sally Rooney: „Rozmowach z przyjaciółmi”, „Normalnych Ludziach” oraz „Gdzie jesteś, piękny świecie”. Tekst skupia się na przedstawieniu poglądów postaci w stosunku do różnych sfer życia, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich przynależności do wspomnianej grupy pokoleniowej. Rozdział pierwszy obejmuje część teoretyczną: przedstawia założenia teorii pokoleń, wyjaśnia znaczenie nazw określających poszczególne grupy demograficzne oraz szczegółowo opisuje cechy Millenialsów. Rozdział drugi jest poświęcony analizie postaw tej grupy wobec tematów z zakresu życia społecznego: kapitalizmu, pieniędzy, podziału klasowego oraz środowiska. W rozdziale trzecim zbadane zostało podejście bohaterów do edukacji i kariery, rodziny oraz związków i seksualności. Ostatnia część pracy jest podsumowaniem dokonanej analizy na temat postaci. Odpowiada ona również na pytanie, czy powieści Rooney mogą być traktowane jako źródło informacji na temat pokolenia Millenialsów. Ponadto, zakończenie analizuje wartość i znaczenie literatury irlandzkiej autorki w szerszym kontekście.

This thesis undertakes to examine the Millennial characters in an Irish writer Sally Rooney’s novels: Conversations with Friends, Normal People, and Beautiful World, Where Are You. The dissertation focuses on analysing the protagonists’ views on various spheres of life, taking into consideration the generational group they belong to in particular. The first chapter includes the theoretical part of this thesis: the theory of generations and the importance of generational labels, and the detailed portrait of the Millennial generation. The second chapter is devoted to the literary analysis of Rooney’s novels. In this part of the text, the social areas of life: capitalism and money, class division, and environmental crisis are in the main focus. The protagonists’ views on these issues taking their age and generation into consideration are explored. In the third chapter an analysis of Rooney’s Millennial characters and their approach towards such aspects as: education and career, relationships and sexuality, and family is undertaken. In Conclusions, a summery the observations about the millennial characters in Rooney’s novels and answer the question if her books can be a source of information about this generation are provided. Ultimately, the thesis discusses the importance of the novelist’s prose beyond the context of the Millennials.
