Discovering Mozambican feminism - analysis of main female characters of the novel "The last fly of the flamingo" by Mia Couto.

Celem poniższej pracy licencjackiej jest analiza bohaterek powieści Ostatni lot flaminga autorstwa Mii Couto pod kątem funkcji pełnionych przez nie w ich społeczności oraz z perspektywy feminizmu. Akcja książki rozgrywa się tuż po wojnie o niepodległość, w czasach postkolonialnych. W tym czasie feminizm jako ruch domagający się równości był już obecny w kraju, ale nie cieszył się dużym poparciem obywateli. W związku z tym zostało pokazane, jak Mia Couto szkicuje obraz kobiet w literaturze, aby pośrednio wesprzeć walkę o ich prawa w rzeczywistości nowo powstałego kraju.W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiona została historia mozambickiego feminizmu, od czasów kolonialnych do współczesności. Następnie przeanalizowany został profil mozambickiego autora jako feministy, przyglądając się jego innym dziełom i wywiadom, aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego pisze tak dużo o silnych postaciach kobiecych i podkreśla ich wartość dla społeczeństwa. W drugim rozdziale dokonano analizy czterech bohaterek powieści Ostatni lot flaminga, które wyróżniają się na tle innych przedstawionych postaci. Zostało przedstawione w jaki sposób przekraczają oczekiwania i są ważne pomimo (lub w niektórych momentach z powodu) bycia kobietami, a także powody, dla których okazują się fundamentalne dla rozwoju akcji. Na końcu pracy znajdują się wnioski podsumowujące dotychczasowe rozważania.

The objective of this Bachelor’s Thesis is to analyze heroines of the novel “The Last Flight of the Flamingo” by Mia Couto, in terms of the functions performed by them in their society and from a perspective of feminism. The narrative arc takes place after the War of Independence during the post-colonialism. In that time feminism as a movement was already present in the country, but it wasn’t greatly supported by its citizens. Because of that it has been shown how Mia Couto describes the view of women in the literature, to indirectly bolster their fight for rights in a reality of a new-born country.The first chapter describes the history of Mozambican feminism, from colonialism to the present time. After that the profile of Mozambican author is analyzed as a potential feminist, inspecting his other work and interviews. It is done to explain his reasoning for writing so much about strong women characters and repeatedly pointing out their value for society. Next, in the analytical chapter, it is evaluated how the four main heroines in the novel “The Last Flight of the Flamingo” stand out among other characters. It is shown how they break the expectations and how important they are despite (or sometimes because of) being women, as well as reasons which show why they are fundamental to the development of the plot. At the end of the thesis, there are conclusions which sum up the aforementioned points.

O objetivo do seguinte trabalho de licenciatura é analisar as protagonistas femininas do romance O último voo do flamingo de Mia Couto sob a questão das funções desempenhadas por elas na sua comunidade e da perspetiva do feminismo. A ação do livro acontece pouco depois da Guerra da Independência, no tempo pós-colonial. Naquele tempo o feminismo como um movimento de reivindicação de igualdade já estava presente no país, mas não muito suportado por cidadãos. Em vista disso, mostra-se o modo como Mia Couto esboça uma imagem das mulheres na literatura para possivelmente apoiar a luta pelos direitos delas na realidade de um país recém-formado.No primeiro capítulo fala-se da historia do feminismo moçambicano, desde os tempos coloniais até a atualidade. Depois analisa-se o perfil do autor moçambicano enquanto feminista, observando outras obras dele e entrevistas para responder à pergunta porque é que escreve tanto sobre as personagens femininas fortes e sublinha o valor delas para a sociedade. A seguir, no capítulo analítico observam-se quatro personagens femininas do romance O último voo do flamingo que se destacam entre outras personagens apresentadas. Mostra-se como elas excedem as expetativas e são importantes apesar de (ou, nalguns momentos, por) serem mulheres, e az razões pelas quais se revelam fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da ação. No final da tese encontram-se as conclusões, que resumem as reflexões anteriores.
