Table-top role-playing games (abbreviated tRPG) also known as simply role-playing games (abbreviated RPG), are a combination of games and improvised theatre, where the gameplay is based on participants describing their actions using words, supported by random elements resulting from the throw of dice according to a set of rules called a system. By basing the entire gameplay on the immersion resulting from the impersonation of the player's created character, dissociation from one's own person and empathisation with the resulting imaginary persona becomes an important element. Due to the many similarities with elements of psychotherapy, such as the focus on behaviour, its origins and consequences, or relationships with other people, there is potential for the use of role-playing games as a medium in psychotherapy. An example of such use could be to create a representation of the source of a traumatic experience and allow the patient to confront it in a controlled setting. The aim of this paper is to analyse existing research on the benefits of role-playing games, their impact on the player and possible therapeutic applications.
