Polish subtitles in German film using The Lives of Others as an example. An attempt to analyse translation strategies

Niniejsza praca analizuje różne aspekty tłumaczenia, zarówno teoretyczne, jak i praktyczne, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tłumaczenia audiowizualnego. Poniżej omówiono podstawowe teorie przekładu, wprowadzając najpierw teorię ekwiwalencji Kollera, która definiuje pięć typów ekwiwalencji (denotatywna, konotacyjna, tekstowo-normatywna, receptywna i formalno-estetyczna). Zaprezentowano także teorię Skopos, która postuluje, że wybór metody tłumaczenia powinien być uzależniony od jego przeznaczenia. Następnie w artykule omówiono problemy tłumaczeniowe. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na trudności związane z tłumaczeniem idiomów i neologizmów oraz ich funkcją w kontekście kulturowym.W ramach badania praktycznego skupiono się na tłumaczeniach filmów. Jako przykład posłużył film „Życie innych”. W ramach analizy zbadano, w jakim stopniu tłumaczenie napisów z języka niemieckiego na język polski adekwatnie odzwierciedla aspekty językowe oraz polityczno-kulturowe NRD. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na skrócenie dialogów w napisach, dbając o zachowanie emocji i tonu oryginału. Praca ta pokazuje, jak istotne jest zrozumienie subtelnych różnic między językami, aby zapewnić jakość tłumaczeń, pokonać bariery językowe i kulturowe oraz umożliwić międzynarodową wymianę kulturalną.Podkreśla rolę tłumacza jako mediatora między kulturami i językami oraz wyzwania, jakie niesie ze sobą tłumaczenie audiowizualne.Jako przykład analizy posłużył film Życie na podsłuchu (2006), który zilustrował niemiecki kontekst historyczno-polityczny oraz wyzwania związane z tłumaczeniem specyficznych terminów NRD na język polski. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na odpowiednie przełożenie niuansów kulturowych i językowych oraz emocji, które są kluczowe dla zrozumienia fabuły.W zakończeniu pracy podkreślono znaczenie wysokiej jakości tłumaczeń audiowizualnych dla promowania międzynarodowej wymiany kulturalnej.

This paper presents an analysis of the various aspects of translation, both in theoretical and practical terms, with a particular focus on audiovisual translation. The following section presents an overview of fundamental translation theories, commencing with Koller's equivalence theory. This theory identifies five categories of equivalence: denotative, connotative, textual-normative, receptive, and formal-aesthetic. Moreover, the Skopos theory was presented, which postulates that the selection of a translation method should be based on the desired outcome. Subsequently, the paper addresses the challenges inherent to the translation of idioms and neologisms, elucidating their role in a cultural context.The practical investigation was centred on the analysis of film translations. The film The Lives of Others (2006) was selected for illustrative purposes. The analysis examined the extent to which the translation of the inscriptions from German into Polish adequately reflects both the linguistic and the political and cultural aspects of the German Democratic Republic. Specific consideration was given to the reduction of dialogue in the subtitles, with the objective of maintaining the emotional and tonal nuances of the source text. This work illustrates the significance of grasping the nuanced distinctions between languages to guarantee the calibre of translations, surmount linguistic and cultural obstacles and facilitate global cultural interchange.It emphasises the function of the translator as an intermediary between cultures and languages, as well as the difficulties that audiovisual translation presents for them.

Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert verschiedene Aspekte der Übersetzung, sowohl theoretisch als auch praktisch, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf der audiovisuellen Übersetzung liegt. Im Folgenden werden grundlegende Übersetzungstheorien erörtert, wobei zunächst die Äquivalenztheorie von Koller vorgestellt wird, welche fünf Arten von Äquivalenz definiert (denotativ, konnotativ, textuell-normativ, rezeptiv und formal-ästhetisch). Des Weiteren wurde die Skopos-Theorie präsentiert, welche postuliert, dass die Wahl der Übersetzungsmethode von ihrem Zweck abhängig sein sollte. Im Anschluss werden in der Arbeit Übersetzungsprobleme erörtert. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Schwierigkeiten eingegangen, die mit der Übersetzung von Redewendungen und Neologismen sowie deren Funktionen im kulturellen Kontext verbunden sind.Im Rahmen der praktischen Untersuchung wurde der Fokus auf Filmübersetzungen gelegt. Als Beispiel wurde der Film Das Leben der Anderen (2006) herangezogen. Im Rahmen der Analyse wurde untersucht, inwiefern die Übersetzung der Inschriften vom Deutschen ins Polnische sowohl sprachliche als auch politische und kulturelle Aspekte der DDR adäquat widerspiegelt. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Kürzung der Dialoge in den Untertiteln gelegt, wobei darauf geachtet wurde, die Emotionen und den Ton des Originals zu bewahren. Die vorliegende Arbeit demonstriert die Relevanz eines Verständnisses der subtilen Unterschiede zwischen Sprachen, um die Qualität von Übersetzungen zu gewährleisten, sprachliche und kulturelle Barrieren zu überwinden und einen internationalen Kulturaustausch zu ermöglichen.Sie unterstreicht die Rolle des Übersetzers als Vermittler zwischen Kulturen und Sprachen sowie die Herausforderungen, die die audiovisuelle Übersetzung für ihn mit sich bringt.
