Tłumaczenie neologizmów w wybranych powieściach science fiction Philipa K. Dicka w kontekście angielsko-polskich przekładów gatunku

Większość tekstów należących do gatunku znanego jako science fiction lub fantastyka naukowa powstała spod pióra autorów brytyjskich i amerykańskich. Co za tym idzie, polski czytelnik poznaje kanon literatury fantastycznonaukowej głównie dzięki tłumaczeniom anglojęzycznych powieści i opowiadań. Jeden z kluczowych aspektów warstwy językowej gatunku, czyli nagromadzenie neologizmów, może jednak stanowić niemałe wyzwanie dla tłumacza ze względu na brak uniwersalnych strategii służących do rozwiązania tego problemu przekładowego. Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej było zbadanie i zidentyfikowanie metod oraz technik użytych w tym celu przez tłumaczy pięciu powieści Philipa K. Dicka: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Now Wait for Last Year, The Simulacra, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch i Ubik. Praca składa się z trzech głównych części: pierwsza omawia definicje i klasyfikacje neologizmu oraz jego rolę w fantastyce naukowej, druga poświęcona jest biografii pisarza i recepcji jego dzieł w Polsce, natomiast trzecia zawiera analizę komparatywną wybranych neologizmów i ich tłumaczeń, a także podejmuje próbę wyjaśnienia wyborów poszczególnych tłumaczy poprzez osadzenie ich w kontekście norm charakterystycznych dla angielsko-polskich tłumaczeń literatury science fiction.

Compliant with a predominantly Anglophone type of literature, the overwhelming majority of science fiction texts are either American or British. Consequently, Polish readers discover most of the sci-fi canon via translations. However, a crucial linguistic feature of the genre, i.e. a proliferation of neologisms, may pose a serious challenge for the translator since there exist no universal rules to deal with this issue. The aim of the present paper is therefore to investigate and identify the methods and techniques used by the Polish translators of five novels by Philip K. Dick: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Now Wait for Last Year, The Simulacra, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and Ubik. The thesis comprises three major parts: while the first one discusses definitions and taxonomies of neologisms as well as their role in science fiction, the second provides biographical information on the writer and comments on the reception of his work in Poland. The third part offers a comparative analysis of selected neologisms and their translations, and subsequently attempts to interpret and explain the translators’ choices by delineating the norms governing English-Polish translations of science fiction.
