The sisters have devil under their skin! Reflection on nunsploitation and its hidden feminist potential

W swojej pracy dyplomowej, z pogranicza kulturoznawstwa i filmoznawstwa, przeprowadzam studium przypadku jakim jest podgatunek kina eksploatacji zwany nunsploitation, powstały na początku lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. Postacią centralną tego typu filmów jest zakonnica - młoda kobieta, która jako nowicjuszka próbuje odnaleźć się w nowej rzeczywistości życia za murami klasztoru. Bohaterka zaczyna zauważać powszechny mizoginizm i opresyjność instytucji Kościoła Katolickiego. Narasta w niej poczucie buntu. Odkrywa ona również własną seksualność, co utwierdza ją w przekonaniu, że zakon nie jest miejscem jej przeznaczonym. Na podstawie wybranych filmów postaram się ukazać charakterystyczny zarys fabuły oraz kreację postaci i świata przedstawionego. Dzieła zostaną umieszczone w realiach kulturowych i obyczajowych co pozwoli lepiej zrozumieć genezę ich powstania i zamysł twórców. Analiza wybranych przykładów zostanie poprzedzona refleksją na temat pozycji zakonnicy w hierarchii Kościoła Katolickiego oraz ogólnym namysłem nad rolą duszy i ciała w tradycji chrześcijańskiej. Będę powoływać się m.in na dzieła Ojców Kościoła - św. Augustyna i św. Tomasza – oraz fragmenty Historii seksualności Michela Foucaulta. Jednym z wiodącym motywów mojej pracy jest próba odnalezienia potencjału feministycznego w nunsploitation. Sięgając do tekstów Laury Mulvey i Lindy Williams postaram się udowodnić, że protagonistka tego podgatunku reprezentuje postawę emancypacyjną. Mój wywód wieńczy odwołanie się do współczesnych przykładów dzieł z tego nurtu oraz namysł nad różnicami w tych produkcjach, wynikającymi z innych realiów czasowych.

In my diploma thesis combining the subject of film and cultural studies, I conduct a case study of the sub-genre of exploitation cinema called nunsploitation, created in the early 1970s. The central figure of the genre is a nun - a young woman who, as a novice, tries to find herself in the new reality of life behind the walls of the monastery. The heroine begins to notice the widespread misogyny and oppressiveness of the institution of the Catholic Church. A sense of rebellion grows within her. She also discovers her own sexuality, which makes her believe that the convent is not her destined place. Based on selected films, I will try to show the characteristic outline of the plot and the creation of the characters and the presented world. The works will be placed in the cultural and moral realities, which will allow a better understanding of the genesis of their creation and the intention of their creators. The analysis of the selected examples will be preceded by a reflection on the role of a nun in the Catholic hierarchy and a more general reflection on the role of soul and body in the Christian tradition. I will refer to, inter alia, on the works of the Fathers of the Church - St. Augustine and St. Thomas - and excerpts from Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality. One of the leading motives of my work is trying to find feminist potential in nunsploitation. Referring to the texts of Laura Mulvey and Linda Williams, I will try to prove that the protagonist of this subspecies represents an emancipatory attitude. My argument ends with the reference to contemporary examples of works from this sub-genre and a reflection on the differences in these productions resulting from different time realities.
