Istniała w Krakowie liczna grupa osób, ubogich, chorych, zdemoralizowanych, która żyła na marginesie społeczeństwa. Przez swój wygląd, zachowanie i sposób życia budzili oni niechęć, wzgardę a czasem także litość społeczeństwa. Części z nich starano się w miarę możliwości pomóc, ale dla bardzo wielu tej pomocy nie starczało. Nie udało się Krakowowi I. połowy XIX wieku rozwiązać problemu marginesu społecznego, jego szeregi wciąż się powiększały.
The margins of society are those people who live outside socially accepted norms. These might include the impoverished, people in the penal system, the homeless, the prostitutes, the incurably infectious and mentally ill. This group was quit big in Kraków in first half of 19th century. They were living on the streets, squares or if they were lucky, in hospitals. The richer were helping the poor. They were giving them alms and they were building new shelters for poor. Unfortunately, it was not enough. The margins of society was growing bigger.
