The phenomenon of color blind casting in American cinematography

Celem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest przedstawienie zjawiska color blind casting w amerykańskiej kinematografii i jego oddziaływania na odbiorców. Podstawą rozważań są: film “Mała Syrenka” (2023) oraz seriale “Królowa Kleopatra” (2023) i “Bridgertonowie” (2020), w których wykorzystano color blind casting z różnym skutkiem. Dzięki analizie historii Hollywood oraz zróżnicowania kolorowego środowiska aktorów, możemy zaobserwować zmiany jakie na przestrzeni lat zaszły w podejściu do prezentowania różnych ras na ekranie. Omówione zostało również samo zjawisko color blind casting i jego zastosowanie oraz zjawisko whitewashing. Metodą badawczą jaką zastosowałam w pracy jest analiza zawartości audiowizualnej, a dokładnie analiza trzech wspomnianych wyżej dzieł kinematograficznych pod względem zastosowania przez nie color blind casting. Zgromadzone materiały dowodzą, że kinematografia amerykańska i podejście do różnorodności rasowej na ekranie przeszło ogromne przeobrażenia, a także zastosowanie color blind casting nie w każdym przypadku jest odpowiednim wyborem.

The purpose of my thesis is to present the color blind casting phenomenon in American cinema and its impact on audiences. The basis for consideration is the film "The Little Mermaid" (2023) and the series "Queen Cleopatra" (2023) and "Bridgertons" (2020), in which color blind casting was used with varying results. Through an analysis of the history of Hollywood and the diversity of the color community of actors, we can see the changes that have occurred over the years in the approach to presenting different races on screen. The phenomenon of color blind casting itself and its application, as well as the phenomenon of whitewashing are also discussed. The research method I used in the study is the analysis of audiovisual content, specifically, the analysis of the three aforementioned cinematographic works in terms of their use of color blind casting. The collected materials prove that American cinematography and the approach to racial diversity on the screen has undergone tremendous transformations, and also the use of color blind casting is not in every case an appropriate choice.
