Hungarian feature films about the uprising of 1848-49 : strategies and genres

This article explores Hungarian feature films about the Uprising of 1848-1849, the author reviews the productions on this issue in terms of the presented threads, film genres, and ways of showing the events of the mid-19th century. Focusing on the visual material, one can see that the creators analyzed and presented the Spring of Nations in various ways. Some of them treated history as a starting point for their faithful historical stories, for others the revolution was just a pretext to tell their stories. Often the plots of the films take place many years after the revolution, and the characters refer to it only in their memories. Over the years, the message underwent metamorphosis, initially the revolution appeared only as a romantic, heroic uprising. Later, the events took on the characteristics of a terrible drama and recently they have acquired a less dramatic tone.
