Digital Opportunities in Transformation of Collective and Cultural Memory: The Case of KarDes: Multicultural Memory Tour Guide

master
This thesis focuses on how collective and cultural memory is transformed with digitalization. The age we live in reveals that digitalization has great importance in the daily life practices of societies and the way they experience space. Digitalization is one of the important dynamics that reshape the relationship between society-individual-space and time. Digital areas create a new perception of space and time due to their various functional features. This new perception of time and space created by digital means that macro narratives of individuals and societies also undergo change and transformation. The KarDes: Multicultural Tour Guide application discussed in this study explains how the collective and cultural memory, which is one of the most important building blocks of these macro narratives, is reproduced and shaped in digital spaces. The study accepts digital spaces as a new memory space where collective and cultural memory is produced. Based on this acceptance point, the study defined digital spaces as new inclusive heterotopias where memory is safely preserved, transmitted to generations, sensitive to cultural and collective differences. In this context, KarDes: Multicultural Memory Tour Guide is a digital application that conveys Istanbul's cultural heritage inventories of different ethnicities to its users with multimedia features. The application presents information and stories about these places by showing the physical places on a comprehensive Istanbul map. In this context, the application, which presents a part of Istanbul and its multicultural cultural and collective heritage that is about to disappear, has created a new narrative space by transforming these physical spaces into digital spaces.pl
