Translation and reception of Thomas Bernhard's "The Lime Works" in Poland

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza porównawcza powieści „Kalkwerk” Thomasa Bernharda i jej polskiego tłumaczenia autorstwa Ernesta Dyczka i Marka Feliksa Nowaka, jak i również przedstawienie historii recepcji dzieła w Polsce. Praca podzielona jest na trzy części. Pierwszy rozdział prezentuje wybrane metody z dziedziny teorii przekładu. W drugim rozdziale przeprowadzona zostaje analiza porównawcza tekstu oryginalnego i tłumaczenia w odniesieniu do następujących aspektów i motywów: języka i poetyki powieści, słowa-klucza „Kalkwerk” / „wapniarnia” oraz studium, jakie Konrad prowadzi nad słuchem. Ostatnia część poświęcona jest recepcji powieści oraz jej teatralnej adaptacji autorstwa Krystiana Lupy, a także szczególnej roli reżysera w popularyzacji dzieł Bernharda w Polsce.

The aim of this master thesis is to conduct a comparative anlysis of Thomas Bernhard’s novel „The Lime Works“ and its Polish translation by Ernest Dyczek and Marek Feliks Nowak as well as to present its reception in Poland. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first chapter provides an insight into selected methods of theory of translation. In the second part the comparative analysis of the translation and the original text is carried out in relation to the following aspects and motives: language and poetics, the keyword „Kalkwerk“ („the lime works“) and the Konrad‘s study on hearing. The last part is dedicated to the reception of the novel and ist theatrical adaptation by Krystian Lupa as well as the director’s role in the popularisation of Bernhard’s works in Poland.

Das Ziel der vorliegenden Magisterarbeit ist die vergleichende Analyse des Romans „Das Kalkwerk“ von Thomas Bernhard und seiner polnischen Übersetzung von Ernest Dyczek und Marek Feliks Nowak sowie die Darstellung seiner Rezeptionsgeschichte in Polen. Die Arbeit besteht aus drei Teilen. Zuerst werden ausgewählte übersetzungstheoretische Ansätze dargestellt. Im zweiten Kapitel wird die vergleichende Analyse von der Übersetzung und dem Originaltext in Bezug auf folgende Aspekte und Motive wie Sprache und Poetik, das Schlüsselwort „Kalkwerk“ und Konrads Studie über das Gehör durchgeführt. Der letzte Teil schildert die polnische Rezeption des Romans und seiner theatralischen Adaptation von Krystian Lupa sowie die Rolle des Regisseurs in der Popularisierung von Bernhards Schaffen in Polen.
