The influence of Plato's story about Atlantis on the history of the Numberon in the works of J. R. R. Tolkien

Istotą pracy jest dokonanie analizy porównawczej passusów dzieł Platona dotyczących Atlantydy i Tolkiena na temat Numenoru. Praca usiłuje pokazać podobieństwa między pierwotnym źródłem mitu o Atlantydzie a jej recepcją dokonaną przez Tolkiena. Tekstami źródłowymi mitu o których traktuje praca są więc platońskie dialogi Timajos i Kritiasz. Praca przedstawia ich krótką analizę, omawia występujące postacie i dokonuje streszczenia passusów dotyczących Atlantydy. Praca zawiera biografie Kritiasza i Hermokratesa odwołujące się do starożytnych tekstów źródłowych. Wykorzystane zostają istniejące prace naukowe na temat dzieł Platona, szczególnie traktujące o motywie Atlantydy.Następnie praca przedstawia historię fantastycznej wyspy i państwa Numenor, taką jaka jest ona przedstawione przez Tolkiena w jego pismach. Utwory wzięte pod uwagę to głównie Silmarillion, Niedokończone opowieści, Władca Pierścieni i Listy.Do tej pory żadna praca nie podjęła tematu Atlantydy, jednak istnieją analogiczne prace porównujące inne motywy, jak np “Droga do Śródziemia” Alana Shippey , którą wykorzystam jako wzór dla mojej pracy.Pomimo że podobieństwa między oboma kreacjami fantastycznymi nie zawsze są oczywiste i tożsame, a także mimo że wpływ dzieł pośrednich był dużo większy niż bezpośrednio Timajosa i Kritiasza, to jednak Tolkien mógł być uważnym czytelnikiem dialogów Platona.

The essence of the Bachelor thesis is to make a comparative analysis of the passages of Plato's works on Atlantis and Tolkien's on the subject of Númenor. The work attempts to show the similarities between the original source of the Atlantean myth and its reception by Tolkien. The source texts of the myth are Plato's dialogue Timaeus and Kritias. The work presents their brief analysis, puts forth the characters and summarizes fragments about Atlantis. The work contains biographies of Kritias and Hermocrates referring to ancient source texts. The existing scientific works on the subject of Plato's works will be used, especially those on the theme of Atlantis.The work presents the story of a fantastic island and the state named Numenor, as it is presented by Tolkien in his writings. Works taken into account are mainly “Silmarillion”, “Unfinished Tales”, “Lord of the Rings” and “Letters”.So far, no work has taken up the topic of Atlantis in this way, but there are analogous works comparing other motifs of Greek and Tolkien's literature, such as the "Road to Middle Earth" by Alan Shippey, which is a pattern for my work.Although the similarities between the two fantastic creations are not always obvious and identical, and although the influence of intermediate works was much larger than that of Timaeus and Kritias directly, Tolkien could have been an attentive reader of Plato's dialogues.
