Eleni Karaindrou's Musical Language in the Film Score for Theodoros Angelopoulos' "Eternity and a Day"

Praca licencjacka jest poświęcona analizie języka muzycznego greckiej kompozytorki Eleni Karaindrou na przykładzie ścieżki dźwiękowej do filmu Eternity and a Day w reżyserii Theodora Angelopoulosa. W części pierwszej przedstawiono biografię oraz estetykę twórczości kompozytorki ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jej wieloletniej współpracy z Angelopoulosem. Druga część pracy skupia się na metodologii badania funkcji muzyki filmowej oraz analizie struktury muzycznej wybranego dzieła. Analiza wykazała charakterystykę języka muzycznego Karaindrou. Łączy on elementy tradycji greckiej, instrumentację orkiestrową oraz kameralną melancholię. Muzyka Karaindrou współtworzy warstwę znaczeniową filmu, pełniąc kluczowe funkcje narracyjne, emocjonalne i symboliczne.

This Bachelor’s thesis is devoted to the analysis of the musical language of the Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou, using the soundtrack to the film Eternity and a Day, directed by Theodoros Angelopoulos, as a case study. The first part presents the composer's biography and artistic aesthetics, with a particular focus on her long collaboration with Angelopoulos. The second part of the work focuses on the methodology of examining the functions of film music and the analysis of the musical structure of the selected work. The analysis demonstrates the characteristics of Karaindrou's musical language, which combines elements of Greek tradition, orchestral instrumentation, and chamber melancholy. Karaindrou's music co-creates the film's layer of meaning, fulfilling key narrative, emotional, and symbolic functions.
