The influence of the Tokugawa shogunate's policy, and social change on the structure of prostitution in Edo

Praca analizuje zmiany, które zaszły w strukturze prostytucji w Edo w trakcie okresu rządów siogunatu Tokugawa. Skupia się na wpływach, jakie na legalną i nielegalną prostytucję wywarły polityka siogunatu oraz zmiany społeczne zachodzące w tym okresie. W tym celu porusza również temat stanu społecznego i przedstawia hierarchię społeczną okresu Edo oraz pozycję, jaką zajmowały w niej prostytutki. Opisuje również początki teatru kabuki – formy dramatycznej ściśle związanej z prostytucją tego okresu.

This paper analyses the changes the structure of prostitution in Edo underwent during the Tokugawa period. It focuses on how both legal and illlegal prostitution has been infulenced by the policies of the shogunate, and social change happening during the period. To do so, it also broaches the subject of social status by introducing the social hierarchy of the period and describing the position of prostitutes in it. Furthermore, it also describes the beginnings of the kabuki theater – an art form closely related to prostitution of Tokugawa period.
