Classical Arabic calligraphy and its contemporary reception

Celem tej pracy jest przedstawienie historii klasycznej kaligrafii arabskiej oraz jej rozwoju na przestrzeni dziejów. W pierwszym rozdziale opisana jest historia i pochodzenie pisma arabskiego oraz proces kształtowania się kaligrafii. Na podstawie kilku przykładów omówione zostały wybrane arabskie style kaligraficzne oraz ich zastosowanie. W dalszej części pracy przedstawiona została postać kaligrafa oraz jego warsztat. Następnie opisano, w jaki sposób przekształcała się kaligrafia i jak wpłynęła na inne płaszczyzny artystyczne, takie jak typografia, czy sztuka współczesna. Moją główną intencją było zaprezentowanie współczesnej recepcji kaligrafii arabskiej i znaczenia jej nowoczesnej formy w życiu społecznym. Chciałam również pokazać, że pismo arabskie stanowi inspirację nie tylko dla arabskich twórców, ale również artystów pochodzących spoza terenów Bliskiego Wschodu.

The purpose of this thesis was to present a brief history of classical Arabic calligraphy and its development throughout history. In the first chapter, the general history of Arabic writing, as well as the origin of the Arabic scripture and the process how calligraphy developed are described. On the basis of the selected examples I have presented different calligraphic styles that had been formed early in the history of Arabic artistic writing. In further part of my thesis I have presented a calligrapher and his preparations and also how calligraphy had transformed and how it influenced on other artistic surfaces, such as typography, contemporary art. My main intention was to present a contemporary reception of the Arabic calligraphy, and how its modern form is important nowadays. I also wanted to show that the Arabic letters are an inspiration not only for artists from the Middle East, but also for ones living in other countries.
