Information needs of the 3rd year information management students of the Jagiellonian University in the context of their bachelor works in 2016/17. Qualitative analysis and typology.

W niniejszej pracy omówione zostały potrzeby informacyjne studentów piszących prace licencjackie na kierunku zarządzanie informacją UJ w roku 2016/17 na podstawie jakościowych badań przeprowadzonych przez autorkę. Do głównych celów badania zaliczono: samoocenę potrzeb studentów piszących prace licencjackie, ewolucję tych potrzeb, stopień ich zaspokojenia, napotykane bariery informacyjne oraz towarzyszące temu odczucia i emocje. Odwołano się do modelu Information Search Process Carol Kuhlthau. Za pomocą analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa przedstawione zostały wybrane aspekty dotychczasowych badań potrzeb informacyjnych. Własne badanie empiryczne odbyło się w kilku etapach. Polegało na zgromadzeniu danych za pomocą wywiadu częściowo ustrukturyzowanego, transkrypcji wszystkich wywiadów, kodowaniu, kategoryzacji oraz analizy jakościowej materiału. Potrzeby informacyjne respondentów kształtowane są pod wpływem wielu czynników, jak miejsce, czas czy nawet charakter. W tym przypadku głównym wyznacznikiem stał się temat pracy licencjackiej, gdzie bardzo dużą rolę odgrywa zasób wiedzy początkowej i potrzeba zwiększania go. Studenci napotykali na swojej drodze bariery informacyjne, które przyczyniały się do zmniejszenia efektywności pracy. Potrzeby informacyjne respondentów zmieniały się podczas całego procesu pisania pracy. Wyników badań nie można uogólniać ze względu na małą próbę, jednak mogą one stanowić punkt wyjścia do dalszych dociekań.

This diploma project discusses the information needs of information management students of the Jagiellonian University, writing their bachelor theses in year 2016/2017 – on the basis of qualitative research carried out by the author. The main goals of the research have been: self-assessment of the needs by the students, evolution of these needs, and level of satisfying these needs, encountered information barriers and the accompanying feelings and emotions. The Information Search Process of Carol Kuhlthau has been used as a theoretical basis. Some selected aspects of the current information needs research have been presented basing on the literature review. The author’s own empirical research was divided into several stages. It consisted of collecting data through semi-structured interviews, transcribing all interviews, coding, categorizing and qualitative analysis of the material.The information needs of respondents are influenced by many factors such as place, time or even personality. In this case, the main determinant is the topic of the bachelor’s work, where the initial knowledge and the need to increase it, plays a leading role. Students encountered information barriers that contributed to the reduction of work efficiency. The information needs of the respondents changed during the entire writing process. The results of the study cannot be generalized due to a small sample, but they may provide a starting point for the further investigations.
