Yamato-damashii ideology based on the memoirs of Japanese soldiers from the 1942-1945 Pacific War; attempt at evaluation

Przedmiotem badań niniejszej pracy, jest próba oceny wpływu ideologii Yamato-damashii, na wspomnienia żołnierzy japońskich z lat 1942-1945. Praca jest podzielona na cztery rozdziały. W pierwszym rozdziale autor stara przedstawić się genezę powstania nowoczesnej armii Japonii oraz jej wpływu na społeczeństwo japońskie. Przedstawia wydarzenia, które wpłynęły na zmiany poglądowe w wojsku japońskim. W drugim rozdziale autor skupia się na analizie ruchów ideologicznych, które dominowały w Cesarskiej Armii Japonii. Przedstawia analizę ruchu Yamato-damashii oraz wpływu kokutai na radykalizację duszy Yamato. Autor przedstawia również symbole japońskiego nacjonalizmu tj. bushido i chram Yasukuni. W trzecim rozdziale autor skupia się na analizie wspomnień żołnierzy japońskich z lat 1942-1943. Stara się dokonać próby oceny wpływu ideologii Yamato-damashii na spisane relacje. W czwartym rozdziale autor skupia się na wspomnieniach z lat 1944-1945. Analogicznie jak w rozdziale trzecim koncentruje się na analizie, a następnie próbie oceny. Autor w zakończeniu stara się podsumować wszystkie dziesięć wspomnień i na ich podstawie sformułować ocenę wpływu ideologii Yamato-damashii.

The subject of this thesis, is an attempt to assess the influence of the Yamato-damashii ideology, on the memories of Japanese soldiers from 1942-1945. The thesis is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the author attempts to present the origins of the modern Japanese army and its impact on Japanese society. He outlines the events that influenced the changes of opinion in the Japanese army. In the second chapter, the author focuses on analysing the ideological movements that dominated the Imperial Japanese Army. He presents an analysis of the Yamato-damashii movement and the influence of kokutai on the radicalisation of the Yamato soul. The author also presents the symbols of Japanese nationalism, i.e. bushido and the Yasukuni chram. In the third chapter, the author focuses on analysing the memoirs of Japanese soldiers from 1942 to 1943, and attempts to assess the influence of Yamato-damashii ideology on the written accounts. In the fourth chapter, the author focuses on the memoirs of 1944-1945. Analogously to the third chapter, he concentrates on the analysis and then attempts an evaluation. In the conclusion, the author tries to summarise all ten memoirs and, on the basis of these, formulate an assessment of the impact of Yamato-damashii ideology.
