This adaptation had a great impact on culture and film industry and also opened the door to discussion about social issues relevant to this day. The first chapter presents Shakespeare’s works as a commonly used source of inspiration for adaptation and discusses the cultural phenomenon of Romeo and Juliet’s story, including the impact of the story on the modern world. This chapter also explores further the reason why this particular play, and Shakespeare’s plays in general, are suitable for musical adaptation. The second chapter explores the process that led to the creation of West Side Story and the controversies surrounding the filmmaking.
