At the Crossroads of Identity: Queerness, Arabness and Islam. Social situation of queer people in Levant based on Sīnimā al-Fu’ād (Cinema al-Fu’ād) directed by Muḥammad Suwayd

Poniższa praca zajmuje się tematyką sytuacji społecznej osób queerowych w Lewancie, a także wpływu na nią specyfiki kulturowej i politycznej świata arabskiego. Jej celem jest namysł nad powiązaniami różnych tożsamości społecznych (takich jak queerowość, arabskość, muzułmańskość) próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim stopniu są one wzajemnie się wykluczające. W rozdziale pierwszym krótko przedstawiony zostaje film Sīnimā al-Fu’ād (Kino al-Fu’ād) w reżyserii Muḥammada Suwayda, na podstawie którego oparta jest dalsza refleksja, a także jego główna bohaterka – ’Uskār al-Ḥalabī, czyli syryjska transpłciowa kobiety, która zmuszona jest opuścić rodzinne Aleppo i emigrować do Libanu, gdzie konieczność zarobienia pieniędzy na tranzycję popycha ją ku tańczeniu tańca brzucha w kasynach czy udziałowi w walkach narodowowyzwoleńczych na południu kraju. Kolejne segmenty pracy skupiają się na poszczególnych aspektach wpływających na interpretowanie queerowości w kontekście arabskim. Początkowo analizowana jest charakterystyka budowania społeczeństwa arabskiego, a przede wszystkim jego kolektywistyczne fundamenty. Następnie ma miejsce rozważanie na temat uwarunkowań geograficznych i kulturowych i ich oddziaływania na postrzeganie nieheteronormatywności. W kolejnym fragmencie przybliżone zostaje zagadnienie religii w jej formie zinstytucjonalizowanej oraz indywidualnej. Zakończenie poprzedzone zostaje krótką refleksją na temat kulturowej figury Innego oraz strategii konstruowania tożsamości, a także tego, w jaki sposób stają się one podstawą społecznego wykluczenia.

This work explores the social situation of queer people in the Levant and the impact of the cultural and political specificity of the Arab world. Its aim is to explore the interconnections of various social identities (such as queerness, Arabness, and Muslimness) and to address the extent to which they are mutually exclusive. The first chapter briefly presents the film Sīnimā al-Fu'ād (Cinema al-Fu'ād), directed by Muḥammad Suwayd, upon which the following reflection is based, and its protagonist, Uskār al-Ḥalabī, a Syrian transgender woman forced to leave her hometown Aleppo and emigrate to Lebanon. The need to earn money for her transition pushes her to belly dance in casinos and participate in the liberation struggles in the south of Lebanon. The subsequent sections of the work focus on specific aspects influencing the interpretation of queerness in the context of an Arab world. Initially, the characteristics of Arab society are analyzed, above all its collectivist foundations. This is followed by a contemplation of geographical and cultural conditions and their impact on the perception of non-heteronormativity. The next section explores the issue of religion in its institutionalized and individual forms. The conclusion is preceded by a brief reflection on the cultural figure of the Other and the strategies of constructing social identities, as well as how these become the foundation of exclusion.
