Bob Dylan revisited. “Project Desolation Row” – interpretations, translations, rewritings

Praca zatytułowana „Bob Dylan raz jeszcze. „Projekt Desolation Row” – przekłady, adaptacje, rewizje” składa się ze wstępu, czterech części oraz konkluzji wraz z zakończeniem. Część pierwsza przedstawia biografię Boba Dylana, jego najsłynniejsze utwory oraz recepcję artysty w kulturze zarówno wysokiej, jak i popularnej. Część druga przywołuje kontekst płyty Highway 61 Revisited wraz z okolicznościami powstawania omawianego dzieła oraz zawiera krytyczne komentarze na temat piosenki. Badacze analizują muzyczną warstwę utworu, jego sens filozoficzny, sposoby obrazowania przestrzeni i bohaterów oraz intertekstualność. Część trzecia to dokonywane przez autorkę pracy interpretacje oryginalnego tekstu Desolation Row na trzech płaszczyznach: społeczno-historycznej (totalitaryzm i cenzura, szpital i więzienie jako instytucje opresji, problemy amerykańskiego społeczeństwa lat 60. oraz mit Pogranicza), kulturowej (znaczenie tytułu i najważniejsze inspiracje literackie, kolażowa i hybrydyczna forma, ludyczny oraz performatywny charakter przestrzeni w utworze, środowisko folkowe) oraz metafizycznej (psychodeliczny i oniryczny charakter dzieła, Desolation Row jako rzeczywistość nadprzyrodzona, nieobecność Boga). Część czwarta to rozmaite warianty translacji, adaptacji i parodii Desolation Row. Będą to tłumaczenia, np. na język polski, włoski czy szwedzki, a także dokonane przy jej pomocy rewizje, między innymi religii, współczesnej polityki czy relacji rodzinnych. Zakończenie natomiast obejmuje podsumowanie wszystkich omawianych i przedstawianych treści, pojawiają się w nim także pytania o to, czy „Projekt Desolation Row” to coś, co może kiedykolwiek zostać zakończone, jak w dalszym ciągu można go rozwijać oraz jakie są konsekwencje jego trwania dla samego artysty, tłumaczy, badaczy i całej naszej kultury.

My thesis entitled “Bob Dylan revisited. “Project Desolation Row” – interpretations, translations, rewritings” consists the introduction, four parts and the conclusions. The first part shows the biography of Bob Dylan, his most popular lyrics and reception of the artist whether in high culture or in the popular one. The second part recalls the context of “Highway 61 Revisited” and other circumstances connected with creating this piece of art, including a critical response to the song. The critics analyze the musical elements of the lyrics, its philosophical meaning, different ways of describing both space and characters, and intersexuality as well. In third part we can find three ways of interpretation of the original poem according to the authoress of thesis: sociological and historical point of view (totalitarianism and censorship, hospital and prison as examples of the oppressive institutions, many issues among American society of the 60s and the myth of Frontier); cultural point of view (meaning of the title and Dylan’s most important inspirations from literature, collage and hybrid form, ludic and performative space, Folk Society) and metaphysical one (psychedelic and oniric verses, “Desolation Row” as a supernatural reality, the missing of God). The fourth part shows a specter of translations, adaptations and parodies like, among the others, translations into Polish, Italian or Swedish language as well as revisions of religion, contemporary politics or even family relations. The conclusions contain the summary of previous analyzes and answer the questions: Is “Project Desolation Row” going to finish someday? How to expand it more and more? What its existence brings for the artist, his translators, researchers and our culture overall?
